1-night trip to Volcano, no rental cars available

Hello,

I'd appreciate any advice I can get. My girlfriend and I will be in Maui and are planning to fly to the big island for a night to visit volcano nat park. only problem is that neither hilo or kona have any cars available according to travel booking sites.

any other way to do this trip without a car?

also, is it better to book a head of time or wait until we are in maui if we'd like to arrange a tour? we will most likely be going to the big island 12/28 to 12/29

thanks

You have left it rather late. Cars are all gone.

Best tour options are "self tour" with a rental car. The time of your visit is extremely popular on the Island. You would want a pick-up and drop-off at ITO...not KOA (too far)...if your interest is VNP.

There are organized bus tours available..I suspect...not ideal... Up to you...

This recently reviewed new tour operator might be a consideration for you.

Folks seem to be pleased with the service. They seem to be starting out....so no glitzy website...or fancy phrasing...but their product seems to be well received.

You will be lucky to still find a tour with availability on Christmas week.

The best for VNP is Volcano Discovery.

I think Maryann's is more of a tour the area type deal. It is better to get experts if you are going to do any lava field hiking, and you might want to.

Do not wait ...

You've already learned about waiting to rent a car at Christmas.

Don't expect flights to be easy if you haven't already booked them (but get your tour down first).

You might want to rethink this unless you have a lot of money to spend, because it will be expensive.

There are also Maui companies that do day tours, I don't know them but the Maui forum people will.

Aloha,

Do you have a place to stay for the night on the BI? That's going to be $$$, too!

Have you tried Harpers? Not the cheapest but for just a day I would think doable.

We did a volcanos and hilo tour for $70 each in November. Don't know if they have anything available but give them a try, the tour was great. hawaiicruiseexcursions.com/BigIslandVolcanoI…

Good luck!
