Fishing in Hilo and surrounding area

My family and I are moving to hawaii in the near future, we just bought a place in Hakalau. I'am a huge fisherman and I have had some trouble finding info about fishing on the east side, preferably not charter. All Im really looking for is a place to cast a line and catch some fish. Also if anyone knows anything about the Buddhist temple in hakalau that would be appreciated, as it is next to our house.

Aloha Austin,

There are quite a few spots along and near Hilo bay for shore casting. The fishing supply stores (one of the best is Tokunaga's near Ace Hardware in downtown Hilo) can help with specific fishing gear and methods which will depend on what sort of fish you want to catch.

Along the Hamakua coast most of the ocean is inaccessible because of really high ocean cliffs. You can get to the water at Kolekole beach park and Laupahoehoe beach park though.

If all else fails, there is always Suisan. (The fish market in Hilo.)

A hui hou,
