I also waited to the last minute for a up coming Christmas cruise to rent a car for the day and they are sold out. Can anyone give me some ideas on what there is to do, guide wise, shuttle wise, anything? The tours that the ship offer are quite pricey for a family of four. Whats some not to be missed spots?

Since you missed getting a car I would suggest taking a tour even though it is pricey or making friends with someone on the cruise with a car and split the price.. however with a family of 4 that might be hard.. How old are the children and what are your interests?

Here is a little secret.....the cruise lines have a whole variety of shore excursions to choose from... everything from Mauna Kea, to the Volcano, You really cant do much better at all. In Kona I know you cant.

The tours from the ship are very competively priced

and you have a guaraantee that the ship will wait for you if the tour is late.....on your own they wont.

There is a shuttle to Walmart and Hilo Hatties... thats it. A fun side trip is to shop for tires at sears.... pick up that torque wrench you always wanted.... Thats what there is to do without a ships tour and car.

What tour were you looking into on the ship? This will give us an idea of what peaked your interest. What is your price range? Are you asking for suggestions in Hilo, Kona, or both?

There are many, many options out there. For vehicles there are Big buses (cheapest), mini-buses, 15 passenger vans, taxis, smaller vans, old military style vehicles, SUV's, or even tour vehicles that take 4 people max.

Many tour operators are waiting for your business right outside the ship, for a much better price. In this area there is no guarantee for quality, but in some cases you can find a better tour than is offered on the ship for much less.

There are tours that can last 2 hrs, or tours that can last the whole time you are in port (7+ hrs).

If you are inquiring about Hilo excursions then the top attractions include the waterfalls/rainforest hamakua coast, the volcano (kalapana, HVNP, or both), botanical gardens (quite a few of them), mauna kea, or Hilo town itself with nearby attractions.

There are also tours to Private lands, such as farms/agricultural sites, or kayaking through hilo bay, or biking tours, or even self guided tours.

You can also catch a free shuttle to wal-mart or hilo hatties.

Price ranges are from $0 - over $200 per person.

Not all tours are created equal. In some cases you will not get what you paid for. Your best chance of getting quality is through the ship, but at a cost.

With enough research you can find a great deal elsewhere, so the more information you provide the better advice you will recieve in these forums.
