1st timer planning a fall foliage trip to Wisconsin/Minnesot

Planning a fall foliage trip to the Great Lakes area----esp, Wisconsin, Minnesota--for Fall 2013 and am seeking tips regarding best time to catch peek foliage and best places to visit. Texas leaf-peepers who have never been in area west of Illinois/Indiana in the fall. All tips invited. Thank you.

Great info---yes, we prefer backroads over crowded tourist traps & this is very helpful. Thanks so much.

We've been to Utah but have never caught Colo. or Nova Scotia in the fall. Bucket list behind Wisc/Minn fall foliage. Thanks for the helpful info.

The colors vary a lot depending on the area. Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin have a lot of evergreens along with Aspens and Birch that turn yellow, and the yellow and dark green combination is stunning and there's lots of bluffs. Central Minnesota has a lot of Maples that turn blaze red to yellow, personal favorite spots are Mille Lacs Kathio State Park, which has a fire tower, or Father Hennepin State Park which is much, much smaller but has a nice beach on Lake Mille Lacs. Southeastern MN and western Wisconsin have plenty of leaves and bluffs, but also a lot of oak trees that just kind of turn a dull brown.
