Any Restaurants to Avoid?

We are heading to the Dells this weekend. I am hoping to learn from others experiences of restaraunts to definately avoid, i.e, way over priced, horrible food, bad service. Or, ones to make sure to try. We are not the "gourmet" types, just like good food, reasonable price and some original atmospheres. We have kids ages 13 and 9, and are staying at the Kalahari. We purchased the coupon book on line, and would like to use some coupons. But, am concerned that even with the coupons, some of these may still end up more expensive than comparable establishments.

I recommend any of the Monks restaurants (the new one near the Wilderness is very nice and is close to the Kalahari). We also like to go to River Walk Pub (downtown Dells) and River's Edge Resort which has a really neat atmosphere with aquariums containing native Wisconsin fish (on County Highway A). If you like Mexican food, Pedro's is good and Marley's is a great place for Carribean inspired dishes and your kids will probably like the atmosphere. For chains, you won't go wrong with Damons or Uno's or Applebee's. And stop at Cold Stone Creamery Ice Cream (in same strip as Applebee's) for great ice cream treats (not cheap though). For faster food, Culver's is great - there's one close to Kalahari and another in downtown Dells.

In case you aren't familiar with the area, the Kalahari (and Wilderness and Great Wolf Lodge) are located a ways from the downtown Dells area. You will definitely need a car for traveling to any of the places I mentioned except Damon's - that's right next to Kalahari.

We are in the Dells area most weekends and tend to go to the same places, but we do try out others. I've listed our favorites.

I highly recommend the River's Edge Resort. Great food, great atmosphere. We also went to the Stand Rock Buffet in the HoChunk Casino. Reasonably priced, and lots of food to choose from. Saturday nites is the prime rib buffet. I do not recommend the Ponderosa restaurant however. That cost more than the buffet did, and the food wasn't as good.

For dinner and a show try the Tokyo place across from Marleys. They have the cook right in front of you and do tricks. It is fun to watch. They servce steak and shrimp and salmon and chicken kind of things. its a great experience but costs a bit. For my and my husband to get our two meals (plus tips) it was $50.

none of the places are really bad. black barts has a buffet and it was so-so and not to bad priced. the steak place connected to it is pretty good though.

If you find it to be a rainy day and you are tired of swimming or want to kill 2 hours try wizard quest. It is a fun activity for the family to work together or in teams against eachother. we make sure to vist there every year when we go. you get a sheet of questions and you search for the answerd throughout 5 lands in the building. you answer questions and then get points and if you reach so many points you get a % off in the store. Its alot of fun and time passes quickly.

a nice afternoon treat at the cheesecake factory (located on the strip near the train bridge). they have the best cheesecake. we found ourselves going there almost every day.

I also recommend going to the hypnotist show (if its still tere) its located across from the riverview waterpark. we went to the "R" version but there is a day version for families.

monks is really a great place. meals are served on frisbees (it might have only been kids meals).

i recommend trying different places everyday. it makes it alot more fun. also try to avoid your typical fast food places. Although you may want to stop at the McDonalds on your way into town (by walgreens and riverview waterpark) its a log cabin and has a few neat things.
