Road trip Chicago to Milwaukee

Greeting from Australia,

Am looking for suggestions for a 2-3 day road trip driving from Chicago to Milwaukee (Sat/Sun/Mon beginning of June). Hoping to see quintessential America - not touristy theme park sights. Interested in scenery, food, farmers markets, architecture.

Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated,

Rose

It is only about a two hour drive from Chicago to Milwaukee. Most of the drive takes you through the urban sprawl of Chicago's suburbs.

What you are looking for is west or north of Milwaukee. You could either take Interstate 90 northwest out of Chicago and enter Wisconsin at Beloit or you could just take Interstate 94 north out of Chicago.

Your route should depend on how much time you actually want to spend driving, but some of the interesting towns in Wisconsin are Monroe, New Glarus, Lake Geneva, Burlington.

Here are a couple of websites that might help you plan.

Once you let us know about how much time you want to spend behind the wheel we may be able to suggest more specific destinations.

And, of course there will be more information about events as we get closer to the season.

Check these areas: New Glarus, Monroe and Mount Horeb (scenic, not urban, good food--cheese galore (especially Monroe!) and Swiss cuisine

www.swisstown.com

www.trollway.com

I see przyk mentioned the same, these are good locations.

In Burlington: Chocolate Museum, Spinning Top and Yo-Yo/logic puzzle museum

a popular area between Chicago and Milwaukee is Lake Geneva. It's definitely scenic.

www.milwaukeedomes.org is a good stop (architecture and scenic interior)

Old World Wisconsin is on 700 plus acres and offers a variety of architecture reflecting old world homes. oldworldwisconsin.wisconsinhistory.org/

House on the Rock is a must see for architecture and the Talesin. HOTR is a tourist stop too just because it is unusual and quirky so if this is a turn off then avoid it.

also in New Glarus: New Glarus Brewing, great location atop a hill, self guided tours, worth stopping at.

www.chaletlandhaus.com lodging (Sugar River Trail behind resort).

Near Mount Horeb: Cave of the Mounds www.caveofthemounds.com lovely location and flowers, good cave tour. Nearby to this for architecture check out Little Norway www.littlenorway.com

If you're into trains this is great for any age: http://www.whrc-wi.org/trainbarn/

It's in the heart of rural farm country and a neat location to stumble across. The interior is fascinating especially how the trains are run and powered by parts of toasters and other household objects. Ride the train outdoors. It was worth a mention just in case you'd happen to be interested in that sort of thing.

the video on the New Glarus website gives you a good idea of the area. Also in Lake Geneva a mail boat tour is fun way to tour the area. They deliver mail on the Lake in the summer, so the carrier jumps on/off the boat quickly at each stop;

The Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago gets a lot of mention on here. I haven't been to that one yet.

THANKS for all the info - lot's of research to do now.

Quite happy driving all day with stops along the way; last time I was in the States I did a 230mile round trip taking in Lake Tahoe - it was a great day - scenery and housing so different to Oz.

Once again THANKS

Don't go to New Glarus if you are looking for quintessential America and not touristy-it is a replica Swiss village. Also, the New Glarus/Monroe area is way out of your way. In my opinion, the town square in Monroe is pretty, but only interesting for a half hour or so. Lots of driving to get there and not much there when you do. Stay closer to Lake Michigan. Consider going a bit more north than Milwaukee-Port Washington is a good choice.

Another question is will you be staying overnight in Milwaukee or do you want to look for lodging in smaller towns?

If you want to drive a little more you might think about places like Sp[ring Green. Sine you mentioned an interest in architecture Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin estate is in Spring Green. http://www.taliesinpreservation.org/

From there you could go north to Portage or east to Madison. Madison is an interesting city, dominated by the University of Wisconsin and Wisconsin State Capitol.
