Green Bay or Milwaukee hotel? Delta messing up our plans.

We are flying in for the Packers/Bears game from Texas. Since Delta keeps changing our schedule (another story but), not sure exactly what time we will arrive. We are coming in Friday for the Sunday night game but flying in and out of Milwaukee and driving up.

I made a reservation for Friday night at the Quality in Green Bay for that night but now am wondering if we should just stay in Milwaukee Friday and drive up Saturday since Delta keeps messing up our flights.

I am ready to cancel with Delta since this is the second time they have changed our flights and given us unmakable connections. They cancel and change our flights and twice have put us on flights where the connections leave before our connecting flight arrives. (right now, our flight out of Milwaukee leaves AFTER our connection arrives in San Antonio!) I am tired of dealing with them, they are unbelievable!

Questions:

A. Stay in Green Bay or Milwaukee

B. Change airlines (none have very good connection) and get a refund from Delta? Midwest has decent schedule but cost an extra $100. Worth it?

C. Try to get Delta to fly us into Green Bay

D. Best airline for the area?

E. How long time wise is the drive from Milwaukee to Green Bay?

Phew.....Thank goodness we are flying in early or I would be very worried. We are staying at the Hampton (GB) Saturday and Sunday night.

I have put way to much time into these changes and so tired of the airlines changing flights at their whim. If I change something, they charge me. Not fair!

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!!!

As a frequent flyer on Midwest I can tell you I would pay an extra $100.00 to fly Midwest. I believe the Midwest San Antonio service stops in Kansas City on the way to Milwaukee, but it's still worth it. Midwest flys small commuter planes to Green Bay too. If it is possible to cancel Delta (probably easier said than done) and book Midwest I would do it.

The drive from Milwaukee to Green Bay is about 2 hours, but it is an easy drive once you get out of Milwaukee, except on Packer game day. I guess on a Friday night you are likely to find many Chicago and Milwaukee city folks heading "up north" for the weekend, but the drive should still be easy enough. The first half of the drive from Milwaukee to Sheboygan is suburban to rural, but once you get past Sheboygan exits and services are a little more scattered. Manitowoc, north of Sheboygan also has motels, restaurants and service along the Interstate.

Milwuakee is a fun town and will really be buzzing in September (I think that's when the Packer/Bear game is scheduled in Green Bay)

if the Brewers are still in the penant race. If you find time I think you would enjoy a night in Milwaukee, but I understand the main purpose is to get to Green Bay.

Thanks for the reply.

Just talked to Delta and a refund is not a problem. They made the change so it is my perogative to cancel.

Are schedule changes a big problem with Midwest? I booked in April with Delta and have had 2 major changes already and Rep told me they would probably change again in Sept.

I have to decide on Midwest today as the fare has gone up. I put the lower fare on a 24 hold yesterday. Good thing since it is up over $80 more today.

In KC I only have 30 minutes between flights. Is that enough? Since they don't have a lot of flights I don't want to miss a connection!

I also think Midwest is a GREAT airline and always choose to fly with them, but I'm not quite sure about their cancellation policy. I've always had non-refundable tickets, but never needed to cancel. You may want to stay in Milwaukee on Friday night to experience the city since you will be in Green Bay already for 2 days. The drive is about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Int. 43 is a straight shot to Green Bay. Also, I would suggest getting to Lambeau field at least an hour before the game to experience some of the tailgating. It is a lot of fun.

Midwest is not that big, so I can't imagine you will have to walk more than a couple of gates to make your flight change in KC, if you even have to change planes. Plus they will have decent food for purchase on board, so if you don't have time to eat in KC you can buy a sandwich or meal on board your flight. Midwest has a very different approach to connecting flights. They will hold the plane in KC 15 to 30 minutes if you are late coming in. This has happened to me many times in Milwaukee where we have waited for even just a couple of people coming in for a connecting flight.

I do not believe you will be sorry if you choose Midwest. Any schedule change would not likely involve more than a few minutes and they will NOT mess you up with a schedule change so you can't make your connection in KC. They are small enough to realize the impact of schedule changes. If you can get your refund from Delta and switch to Midwest, do it.

I would tend to agree. I've flown into Cincinnati/CVG and have had the displeasure of having to deal with them, several times on lost luggage, etc. I have just really had my fill of Delta -and- United. United lost my luggage on one trip in BOTH directions. Unreal, but true.

My two airlines of choice right now are Midwest and NW. Midwest has excellent airplanes to fly on, and the seats are fantastic. They are wider, and give more spacing, unlike the cattle stalls normally found on an airplane. I appreciate that. NW just hasn't done anything seriously wrong to ruin my day. That's why they are still on the list.

I would also agree on the staying in Milwaukee on Friday night. They have a lot to offer, and you can catch some great meals and maybe a little entertainment.

Good luck!

Macc,

I agree with you about Northwest. They are also my second choice after Midwest. Although there has been a lot of recent press about cancelled Northwest flights they have always treated me well and I like connecting in their hubs better than many others.

LOVE Midwest! No one here has mentioned that they give out complimentary yummy chocolate cookies, too. You won't be disappointed!

Okay, I locked in the trip on Midwest. Glad to have it settled, again.... thanks so much to all of you for your replies.

Haven't decided on where to stay yet. We get in about 3pm so either is an option. Could easily drive to Green Bay or stay in Milwaukee. For Milwaukee where would you suggest we stay? Is the downtown a good place like Chicago is? We'e not into clubbing just nice dinner and some sightseeing. Is there a casino in Milwaukee? Anything special in October that would be going on? Good restaurants?

We will be staying in Milwaukee on Monday night for an early flight on Tuesday, so we can sighsee then too. I booked through Hotwire and got the Holiday Inn near the airport for Monday. Any help would be appreciated!!!

There is an Indian casino in Milwaukee, the Potowotomi Casino. They have lots of slots and blackjack, not sure about other table games. It is located close to downtown, but in an old industrial area, so somewhat isolated. There is a very highly rated restaurant in the casino.

Staying downtown is nice, but hotels may be more expensive, so it is not necessary especially if you will not be out at the bars late. Milwaukee is fairly easy to get around. It is only 15 or 20 minutes from the airport area to downtown and hotels are cheaper in that area.

Milwaukee has lots of great restaurants of all different kinds. Check some of the previous trip advisor posts and you should get lots of ideas.

Also the downtown Milwaukee freeway interchange is under total reconstruction. www.mchange.org is a good web site to keep on file and check right before your trip for up to date info on lane and ramp closures.
