Door county in Oct

Will be visiting Door county in early oct for about 5 days. Want to see alot of the state/county parks. Any idea where it would be best to stay for location wise and how far is it to drive from Sturgeon bay up to WA island? Any info would be great!

First, go to www.doorcounty.com for information, and request a visitor's guide. Will have all the info you need about parks and more.

Best place to stay is Egg Harbor and north. Bay side of Peninsula is busier, lake side is quieter.

Sturgeon Bay to Northport is 41 miles, then you take the ferry to Washington Island.

Make reservations NOW for weekends of 10-9 and 10-16. Not kidding about this!

Sailing Fan is right. Make reservations now, for those dates (because of the fall colors and festivals, those dates are in high demand!) :)

The first time we went to Door County we stayed in Sturgeon Bay. Too Far from everything (for us, at least)

We also have stayed in Egg Harbor at the Landmark Resort and that location was nice because there are lots of shops and restaurants in Egg Harbor.

We then found a place we liked in Ephraim and have since been staying in Ephraim. It is very close to Peninsula State Park and also in view of the beautiful water of Eagle Harbor.

It is very easy to lose track of time at Peninsula State Park.

We were just in Door County a few weeks ago and yet still found unturned stones in Egg Harbor, Fish Creek,Ephraim. So do your research. There is so much to see and do! A great hike is the Eagle Trail in Pensinsula State Park.Any more questions, just ask.

We visit Door County often but avoid the two big festivals in October and choose to go afterwards. You may not get the best fall colors but will avoid huge crowds, traffic and some big time price gouging by some resorts. One large resort in Egg Harbor charges 100.00 more per room night during Pumpkin Patch Festival. A place in Fish Creek or Ephraim will put you in the middle of everything.

Wisconsinsites and visitors to the Door usually just say we're going to Door County, not the specific area because once you get there, you find yourself driving "just a little bit farther" to see the next town or site. Early October is wonderful, that's when we usually go, but if you can avoid the weekends. It will be very crowded in prime areas. Fish Creek is a very popular location and the main road goes right through the downtown shopping/sightseeing area. If you go on the weekend, just be prepared for that bottle neck. The rest of the popular areas like Wilson's in Ephraim will be crowded. If that's the only time you can go, don't let it keep you away.

Sturgeon Bay to Washington Island will be about a good 40 minute drive. If you're thinking of staying there, consider being further into the Door. We like Egg Harbor--it's at the south end. You'll see plenty of color. We were surprised to see trees turning earlier this week--it may be because of their drought or cool weather.

If you do drive from Sturgeon Bay up, the most direct route is the highway, but there's a back county road--Highway G the hugs the shore and is wonderful, it takes you right into Egg Harbor.

Definitely get the info from the Door County visitors bureau, but we like picking up a county map to help you find all the out of the way back roads.
