mountaineer versus wheeling island casino?

I've been to Mountaineer, now thinking of a trip in the fall to Wheeling Island Casino. Just one night stay, maybe two if there's enough in the area to do. We've already been to Oglebay, and will definitely stop there again. What else should we see? How does Wheeling Island compare to Mountaineer? Better slots, more selection?

Thanks for your help!

Wheeling has a quaint town off the island. There is a historic fish market that also houses an art gallery, a cheese & meat shop and a few others. Across the street there is a small (cramped) but neat book store with lots of oldies but goodies. If you feel like being elbow to elbow with a stranger, this is the place to be. There are plenty of coffee shops & diners and a handful of stores including one department store. There is a nice park by the water which is connected to a massive bike/ walking trail that is unknown in length but the short distance I went was quite scenic. There is a historic museum and a decent sized visitors center. A few thrift stores, a bakery outlet, and the Capitol Country Jamboree Music Hall which is set to re-open in the months to come. Not only is it set to have Country themed venues but also Rock, special interest, and movie showcases. There are 2 adult video stores in the area if that interests you.

With the cost of living and repairs the typical house shows some disrepair but they are beautiful either way. There are some nice refurbished ones as well.

As for the casinos, Mountaineer is a bit darker in areas(I like it that way to appreciate the neon lighting and slots machine artwork - sensual). The air filering & conditioning isn't the greatest but if you don't like smoke youe really shouldn't be going to slot parlors! There is a seperate mini parlor track-side that also has poker, horse racing, and several eateries including an outdoor grille with great food items during the summer months. There are two strip-joints across the street and the Homer Laughlin - Fiestaware factories and outlet store down the road. Ohio is just a few miles away but not too much to do there. You definately need a car here. Wheeling is accessable by foot, bike, or boat.

Wheeling is brighter and in some spots Extremely Bright. Though there is a themed section, the lighting drowns out most of the ambiance. That is if you go for more than just the playing itself. The air is a little better there. The buffet is great there (which MTR has none) along with various restaurants and bars. Stay clear of the new coffee shop. It is twice the price of MTR's Starbucks and the taste is usually sub-par. Stick to the Comp coffee from the strolling waitresses and drop them a quarter or two!

No one I know has ever won big at Wheeling as compared with many at MTR. Wheeling usually has better mailed comps as well as shirt givaways every few months. Their point system has been reduced from $7 for 1 Point to $1-to-1. Mountaineer is &1.50 per point but their points are more quicly usable. Wheeling points IMO are nearly worthless.

Both have music offerings but MTR has tremendous amounts of free entertainment every weekend every month in three different spots. Wheeling has a little spot that occasionally ofers something but otherwise requires a purchased ticket to the ballroom. Mountaineer is pretty stingy with mailed comps.

So these are a few scattered ramblings. There

s much more but this is what sticks out just now.

I live near Seneca Niagara and hate it. The slots are so tight they choke you.

Now, over into Canada by the Buffalo Peace Bridge is Fort Erie Racetrack and casina. We win there all the time and best of all there is NO SMOKING!

I hate having to come home stinking with red eyes and sore throat because people are too dumb to realize they are not only killing themselves but us with them.

I've been to Wheeling Island and liked it a lot. It wasn't very crowded theday I went so the smoke didn't bother me too much.

This weekend we are headed to Mountaineer and now you have been afraid I've made a mistake because of the smoke. I have asthma and I just hope I don't get sick. I'm from New York and it's against the law to smoke in public. I love it. However, our Indian casinos don't have to follow white man's laws.

I've been to Wheeling and Mountaineer several times since I live between both - 30 minutes either way. Can be dangerous if you know what I mean. Last time I won a jackpot to claim was in March 2009 at Wheeling. Mountaineer is very tight but used to be much better a few years ago. Wheeling does have a better atmosphere and now offers free play that you can download right to your machine. This month they're offering $25 if you earn just 50 points on a player card (free to sign up). Keno is what I usually play and seems to hit much better than Mountaineer. Two weeks ago I saw someone hit $3,500 on Keno betting just 50 cents on a quarter machine. Buffet is much better as well. They send more comps via mail than Mountaineer as well. Just like the other person said, Mountaineer is very dark as well and tables are scattered. Wheeling has tables located in a central location. I've won more in Wheeling than Mountaineer by far!!

I like Wheeling better than Mountaineer. I agree with some other people about the smoking. I'm a smoker but if I see my smoke going toward someone I will either put my cigaretter out or move if they were at the machine first. The next time you stay in St. Clairsville you must eat at Melman's Cafeteria. It's the best around.

Mountaineer is definately the better choice, better venilation system, more games, and a country atmosphere. The smokers are so bad at Wheeling, you can smell it 3 feet from the entrance door. We went to the non-smoking area and all the ashtrays were full. So if that is your cup of tea, then go for it. Frankly I would rather give my money to Casino Windsor in CANADA because they are smart enough to realize that their workers were in danger from all the second hand smoke. If you try to smoke in that Casino, they will escort you out. They do have a smokers patio overlooking the river if that is your thing.
