Pipestem State Park

We'll be staying in Pipestem State Park for a week in mid-May and would appreciate any suggestions on must-see's & must-do's. We'll probably limit hikes to under four miles... we're looking for spectacular scenery... caves, waterfalls, etc. to visit as a day trip, etc. Recommend a white-water rafting company? Any great but reasonably priced restaurants in the area?

We just returned from a trip to New River Falls Lodge in Hinton

While we were there, we had a woderful dinner at the Mountain Creek Lodge at Pipestem. It was for our anniversary, so we did not mind the prices at all...it was worth every penny. We were really impressed with the portion sizes and the quality of the food!

Unfortunately, other than the food that we cooked ourselves, we were disappointed in the other meals we had. After reading recommendations on tripadvisor, we had lunch at both Kirks and the DQ. The food at DQ was nothing special, but it was better than the food at Kirks. The dining area at the DQ was also better than Kirks, even though it is enclosed. At 2:00 in the afternoon, all the river front tables at Kirks were occupied by people smoking and lingering after their meals. The fried chicken we had there was not good, I even wondered if it had gone bad...

Other than our dining out experiences, we had a great time. I have posted a review of the New River Falls Lodge on the Hinton, WV board.

Check out the New River National River pages. Lots of great sights to see there. We particularly liked Grandview and Thurmond (bit off the beaten path). Certainly I would do the New River Gorge Bridge. Leave time to drive down into the canyon (access from the Vistor Center). Be sure to check out from viewing spots up top too. Very neat to swim in the area between the bridges.

Not to far from the Bridge is Babcock State Park. Pretty place for short visit. We stayed at Hawk's Nest SP, which has decent views (this is downriver from New River Gorge Bridge near a dam, so backed up into a lake). They have a jet boat ride that was OK, take cable car down to bottom).
