In your post, you asked about Berkeley, but I assumed that was a typo, and that you meant Beckley. There is a Berkeley and a Berkeley Springs in West Virginia, but it is about a 4 1/2 hour drive from Hinton, and is located in the Eastern Panhandle, not too far from Washington, DC.

The Beckley/ Hinton area has some of the best State Parks in West Virginia. Be sure to check out Pipestem for golf, horseback riding, swimming, shopping, crafts, dining, camping, etc. Pipestem is my favorite resort in the state: http://www.pipestemresort.com/

Grandview Park is a wonderful litte park with a great view. I don't know if they have a campground, or not, but you could call to find out. www.stateparks.com/grandview_raleigh.html

Grandview has one of the best outdoor amphitheater productions you'll ever see. If you can catch "Honey in the Rock" (story of history of WV), or the Hatfields and McCoys, it may be the highlight of your trip: http://www.theatrewestvirginia.com/

There's also Bluestone State Park, with water activities and camping on the lake: http://www.bluestonesp.com/

Of course, no trip to the area is complete without a stop to visit the John Henry Statue. Most people have heard of the legend of John Henry, but the town of Talcott claims the story as their own: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/11918

Enjoy your visit. It's a beautiful part of the state.

Hinton is a cute little town...but not much in the way of shopping or resturants..BUT if you go there you must try Kirk,s Resturant..its on the river. Homemade food. Wonderful. On up the Interstate is Lewisburg, WV. Small town too, but with lots of neat shops and resturants.

Beckley is a great town too....and a stop at Grandview would be in order. No campgrounds there, but lots of hiking and you should stay for a show too. This year they have Honey in the Rock, Hatfields and McCoy's, The Jungle Book, and All Shook Up.

Bluestone St. Park is near Hinton...they have camping and cabins too.
