Just before the Beckley exit, take the North Beckley exit and head to Fayetteville and take a look at the New River Gorge Bridge. There is a nice wooden walkway that leads to the amazing overlook. (they are doing some maintenance on it this summer but you can at least walk halfway if not all the way on certain days). Nice visitors center there too. Worth a stop. Back in Beckley stop at Tamarack, a large, unique arts and crafts center with amazing merchandise/products/food. High end stuff. Right off the Interstate. Less than a mile off the Beckley exit, stop at Chocolate Moose/Outside In/Mt. St. Golf...a nice little coffee shop/climbing wall/miniature golf course. All in one. VERY unique place. The golf course is so much fun! Continuing on I-64 just a couple of miles outside of Beckley, stop at Grandview National Park. Go to the main overlook. They don't call it "Grandview" for nothing! You could also stop at Little Beaver St. Park, very close to Grandview. Pretty little lake with a nice lake front path/trial going all around it. Halfway paved, but the other half is hard packed dirt. Level and a very easy, pretty walk.
If you do decide to stay in Beckley, there are numerous hotels just off the exit (44). Summer weekends can be a very busy time with sports events, family-school reunions, travelers, etc. Wouldn't hurt to reserve a room, as you can always cancel the day of. Usually by 6:00pm.
Have a great trip!
Do consider a visit to Tamarack_ Wv Arts and Crafts center with Appalachian inspired cuisine.
We visit several times per year.
