Spokane to Banff

We have three children ages 12, 14 and 16 and we will fly into Spokane then drive from Spokane to Banff. We plan to complete the trip from late July to early August. Are there any particular sites or activities that kids would enjoy along the route from Spokane to Banff? We would like to make the drive as kid friendly as possible!! Thank you.

There are several ways to get from Spokane North to Banff National Park. All very scenic. How are you going?

Steve, you are probably going to go up highway 95 out of Coeur d'Alene with that thought in mind you'll go by Silverwood which your kids would love.

but be prepared to spend money and a lot of time.

I'm assuming you just want quick stops for the kids on the way, for that I'd get on the British Columbia forum they could give you some ideas.

Vandan is right of course it's just that most of the Canadian time will be spent in BC.

Do you have your time in Banff worked out?

Phril has a good idea.

Also meant to tell you to check with the rental agency if you haven't already, to see if they allow their cars into Canada, plus you'll have to have good auto insurance to get through the border.

also if you take any meds with you make sure they are in bottles with your name and doctors name on it just in case they pull you aside and go through your stuff.

The fastest route is up highway 95, and it equals the other routes for scenery and things to do. A couple of suggestions:

(1) a short ways north of Cranbrook is Fort Steele Historic Park. Very authentic dating back to the late 19th century, reasonably priced and well worth a visit of a couple of hours. Staff in period costumes, constant skits and dramas acted out, old time theatre productions, great restaurant and candy shop, livestock and farming demonstrations using techniques of the day, craftsmen, etc. Absolutely fabulous - we live an hour and a half away and bought seasons passes when our kids were about the age of yours.

(2) Radium Hot Springs Pools. Operated by the National Park service, just inside Kootenay National Park, includes natural hot spring hot pool but also a cool pool with a diving board, etc. Also a couple of very nice hikes in the 1-2 hour range can be done right from the pool parking lot if your kids enjoy hiking.

(3) Marble Canyon. At the north end of Kootenay National Park near the Banff National Park boundary (about 35 minutes before you get to Banff). This is a short nature trail that has to be seen to be believed. In a 20 minute walk, 7 bridges cross a gaping chasm, set in a regenerating forest that was burned by a wildfire about 10 years ago. Free, as long as you bought a national park pass when you came in the park gate.
