June Trip...time SanJuan & Orcas?

We are a family of 5 (youngest is 11 yrs old). We're staying on San Juan for 2 nights - mid June. We are scheduled to do a 5pm whale watch. That leaves us 1 1/2 days to see the sights. We are considering spending an afternoon on Orcas and a full day on San Juan. We are thinking of renting mopeds/scoot cars on either San Juan or Orcas. We'll probably do alittle hiking, but nothing too difficult. Any advice?

If you want to rent a vehicle to get around on San Juan island here it would be far cheaper and safer to rent a car than separate mopeds. The local company that does that has info on rental cars online at :http://www.sanjuanauto.com/car-rental-friday-harbor-san-juan-island/ Or in June you can get around to most of the sites tourists are interested in with the shuttle bus. You can find out more about that at: http://www.sanjuantransit.com/schedules.html Here is a route map that shows the locations the summer shuttle travels: www.sanjuantransit.com/images/Map2011.gif

Like walking on beaches? The longest beach by far is South Beach here on San Juan at American Camp Park. It's about 2 miles long from the parking lot. If you go at low tide there is more sand although there is sand to walk on even at high tide. No beach here is really what people think of as sandy though as even South beach has small rocks and lots of driftwood above the tide line. Mount Finlayson/Jakle's Lagoon trailhead is directly across the road from South Beach. There are two trails you can take from the Jakle's Lagoon parking lot, one shady one heading down through the trees and the other going up the hill above the road on a windswept ridge with fantastic views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the the Olympic Mountains to the south and also viewing Vancouver Islandto the west. At the nearby American Camp ranger station you can check out the small historic visitor center.

Thanks for your quick response. We'll have a car, so wouldn't need to rent one in SJ. My husband just thought the mopeds/scoot cars would be fun. Thanks for your recommendations for beaches & hikes. We're staying in SJ, but wanted to go to Moran state park for an afternoon. Can we get off the ferry (with the car) @ Orcas to see it and then get back on to go onto Friday Harbor?

If you take a car from SJ to Orcas then you have to buy a ticket for the car (1 ticket which you would buy on Orcas as all car tickets are RT when heading east). Rates are at www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/pdf/CurrentFares.pdf

Yes, you can easily drive from the Orcas ferry landing to Moran State Park with a stop off if you wish to eat or shop at the main (really only) town on Orcas, Eastsound as the road goes right through the town. Moran State Park offers freshwater swimming, old-growth forest hiking, trout fishing, wildlife watching, scenic driving, challenging biking, and much more. You can drive up and visit the historic observation tower on Mt. Constitution with views in all directions..... South to Whidbey, east to Bellingham, north to the Gulf Islands, west toward Vancouver Island. This stone observation tower was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936. To see what I mean about the views check out this amateur footage that at vimeo.com/17183099#http://vimeo.com/17183099 You might want to drive to the top but if you have more time I suggest taking a hike. Lots of info on Moran State Park is at:http://www.thesanjuans.com/orcas-island-places/orcas-parks-forest/orcas-islands-moran-state.shtml For more info on hiking at Moran State Park see wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/mount-constitution…
