Traveling to WA and need help with must sees!

I am traveling to WA with my family 7/1/11-7/11/11 (hubby and kids) We are staying in Port Townsend and driving from UT. Because we are driving, we are up with traveling to see all that WA has to offer, but need help in seeing the "must sees". I am feeling a little overwhelmed by the travel books and need some assistance. Also, any suggestion for the 4th of July? Do we need passports to go to Victoria? Thanks in adavance for any help.

staying in pt townsend pretty much limits you to the olympic national park as a trip to seattle would involve several hours driving each way. victoria is in canada so yes passports are required.

As noted in the above post, you must have passports but you should go to the official website. Note the rules about children, for the different ages.

Please keep your questions to one post; two posts can cause confusion.

Some questions for you; your answers will help us to help you.

Have you used Google Maps to plot your route(s)? It will show you distance and time required to get to various points, including Pt. Townsend. Just to get you going, I can tell you now that Google Maps says, on a straight through drive, 15 hours for 900 miles. At the very least, you'll need one overnight between the two cities, two nights will be less of a hardship, but even then it's closing in on three 5-hour days of driving.

Adding it up, figure how many days/nights you'll have in Port Townsend with no other overnights.

Have you picked areas of interest for your drive from Utah? Do you intend to see Seattle sights? What are your interests?

When you get toward Seattle, you'll have to decide whether to drive abound the south Sound or ferry from Seattle to Port Townsend. Ferry traffic will be heavy during tourist season, but it is scenic and the Seattle - Bainbridge Island ferry is frequent.

As far as I know, there will be fireworks at Ft. Worden.

It's not ideal, but you can explore a lot of the Olympic National Park from PT. And Victoria is perfectly doable as a day trip.

For the kids:

Be sure to visit the Marine Science Center and run around in the bunkers at Ft. Worden. Downtown is the Northwest Maritime center. A beautiful new facility where you can check out wooden boats being built. In Victoria be sure to visit the bug museum.

Port Townsend is lovely but too far to be a base for exploring Olympic National Park, if that is part of your plan. The Hoh Rain Forest is 3 hours and 15 minutes each way from Port Townsend. Rialto Beach is 2 and a half hours each way. Even Hurricane Ridge is 2 hours away.

If ONP is not part of your plan, you will enjoy staying in Port Townsend.

phatmama there is actually more to WA than just the coast. When we go to Utah we always go I90 to highway15 and down it's a awesome scenic drive with lots to see along the way. Eastern and central WA has some great things to see along the way. Riverfront park in Spokane has a wonderful 4th with fire works, food, a sykride over the gorge and falls and lots of things for kids to do.

Along the way there is Leavenworth a cute little town.

And much much more. Just ask and we'll be happy to give you ideas.

It might help to know why you picked Port Townsend. First off I really like Port Townsend. If you know people there great place to visit. Besides all the ideas Pala can give you also consider whale whatching from there. Ferry to lovely Whidbey Island. for a day with a car. Backtracking to get to the Northern Part of Olympic National Park, but it certainly can be done as can a daytrip to Victoria if you get an early start. And people often forget Port Townsend is a good location for visiting the Eastside of the Olympics, which is less visited by out of towners, but has a lot to offer.
