Vern's Bayside

I just heard that Vern's closed down. What happenned? I know the place got a lot of negative reviews, but we always enjoyed eating lunch out on the deck and watching tourists (which we were and still are) getting their feet wet getting off the island. It was so funny to see their reactions when they back to the spit (that had been there only moments before) which was now under water. Hopefully another restaurant will open in its place!

The barefoot bandit got them. He broke in twice and took a lot of money and that was enough to put them out of business.

"Meanwhile, the money from the movie deal will be distributed among Harris-Moore's many victims. This includes at least one restaurant owner who is no longer in business due to the fact that Harris-Moore stole $18,000 from her safe.

That restaurant, Vern's in Eastsound on Orcas Island, was for years owned and operated by Marion Rathbone and her mother. It was a mainstay of the resort island but today there is a handwritten sign on the door saying that it has closed for reasons beyond the owner's control with a plea for someone to step up and re-open the iconic restaurant.

Rathbone had been a severe critic of Harris-Moore, telling everyone that he was no hero and that he had stolen and hurt the "little people," like her. Rathbone was especially angry that the internet had helped make Harris-Moore a folk hero.

Maybe Harris-Moore heard what Rathbone said because he reportedly insisted that the first check of that $1.3 million go to Rathbone to repay the $18,000 he had stolen."

Thanks for the update buckmountain! Yes, the internet and media did create a hero like quality for Harris-Moore which I never understood. He was just a thief that got off reading about his exploits on the internet. Let's hope the money from the movie does actually make it to his victims, and if we are lucky Marion can reopen Vern's. We really miss the place! Thanks again buck!
