Coming to Williamsburg on Christmas day, need advice

Hi, I'm driving the family down from MD on the morning of Dec. 25th. We will have the 25th, 26th and morning of the 27th to hang around colonial W-burg....then it's off to Great Wolf Lodge for a day and a half of Water-parking.

The kids are 8, 8, 5. What are the must-see things in Williamsburg. I would prefer not go to Busch Gardens (and pay the extra $) if possible. Is there enough in the Colonial old Town to keep them busy for basically 2 days? Will they get a taste of the holiday's there? is it open on Christmas Day?? Thanks for the input.

The only difference between Christmas Day and any other day at Colonial Williamsburg is that the historic buildings have shortened hours, otherwise all goes on as usual. During the holidays there is much special programming, most aimed at families with children, so there will be plenty to keep everyone busy for days. The "Hands on History" at the Powell House is a great way for children to have some hands on experience while learning about how an 18th century family observed the holiday. There are numerous evening programs available consisting of a play, musical concerts, storytelling, even ghosts and my particular favorite "Christmastide at Home". Go to www.history.org for a complete listing of holiday entertainments and dining options. Since the holidays were celebrated (if at all) in the 18th century in a much more reverent and subdued manner than today, CW uses mid 19th century/early 20th century traditions as guidlines for it's house and building decor and festivities in general. It is a unique way to experience Christmas as it was in the past.

Colonial Williamsburg is one of three tourist places in Virginia that is open on Christmas Day, December 25th. The others are Mount Vernon and Luray Caverns. Busch Gardens is closed on that day.

You will find many restuarants, etc. closed on that day. I suggest that you contact the Greater Willamsburg Tourism Office for their suggestions on what do that day.

for Colonial Williamsburg owned facilities ...

If you want to eat Christmas Day dinner (they have some places open for breakfast) but mostly on December 25th, dinner starts from 11 am and goes till closing ... MAKE RESERVATIONS NOW ... even today, 5 December 2012 may be too late. Also, outside of but near the historic area you have the restuarants within or near Williamsburg Lodge, Williamsburg Inn, the Woodlands hotel and the Cascades hotel.
