FYI---You posted this in the Washington, VA forum. It's better to post this in the Washington, DC forum. Anyway---check sites like Priceline, Orbitz, Expedia, Travelzoo and compare them with what the airlines are offering. Just note that if one of the discount sites gets you a good rate, it might involve taking 2 or 3 different flights instead of a non-stop. If that doesn't matter to you, then go ahead with the discount sites.

Also check Southwest Airlines. They fly into Baltimore Washington Airport (BWI) from SFO, but you can get from there to DC via public transportation.

There are 3 airports that serve the DC area, National, Dulles and BWI. The rule of thumb is that flights into National are more expensive (because it's just outside of DC) and those into BWI are less expensive.

your best bet would be to check kayak.com it pulls up the best price of almost all airlines (except southwest) from all other websites...I have found that Dulles has the best rates for DC area.

If you are in San Fran, you may want to consider flying out of Oakland where you can get some good deals with low cost carriers
