Day trip from Virginia Beach

Is it feasible to do skyline drive & Shenandoah park as a day trip? Should I at least stay overnight to do both of them? Are the views gonna be worth it this time of the year?

If you go to Front Royal to start Skyline Dr. it'll be about 4 hours at best. Sometimes there are delays on the bridge/tunnel leaving VB and other spots along the way.

Definitely should be overnight, or separate trip. Figure minimum four hours going east on intestate 64 to get to Afton Mountain and get on parkway there. Once you are on parkway or skyline drive the speed limit is 35mph, and you might end up going slower with the twisty turny road.

It could be a day trip if you left really really early and you don't mind driving all day.

Thanks for the responses. If I do have to pick just one, which would you recommend?

You may enjoy it more if you were able to visit during your drive to Virginia Beach or on your way home. It could be 3 1/2 to 5 hrs each way from the beach and that does not take into consideration dirving the Skyline Drive and stopping to view the sights or Visitor centers. Explorer3 brings up a very valid point about what can happen at the HRBT or the MMBT(depending upon which way you travel) Wiliamsburg seems to be a trouble spot at times also, Not to forget Richmond traffic. JoyinVirginia makes another very valid point. There is too much to see for a day trip. Enjoy the beach and relax.
