Which beach area to go to ??

I am taking a day trip from Williamsburg to Va Beach.

Which area is the best to go just for the day. Looking for somewhere maybe w/ a place to eat and cocktails and bath house if they have them but not overcrowded. We will be traveling w/ 4 teenagers so just looking for some family fun/relaxing time

Pretty much any area near public parking. Have a look here for the public parking areas. This will also give you restroom locations (just commodes and sinks, no showers):

visitvirginiabeach.com/visitors/…

It seems like every place there is an exit from the sand there is also a foot wash off just across the boardwalk. There are no public showers but there are shower type (in other words, tall) rinse offs. I have seen people line up for those and do more than rinse off...lathering up at these, people rinsing off beach chairs and babies. Not really a place for an actual shower but people seem patient for those who do take longer. These shower like rinse offs seem to be located at all the public acces areas...at least where I have seen them, that's where they've been. I think the idea is to provide a rinse off opportunity to those taking cars and buses to hotels or to home.

The boardwalk is 3 miles long, about 30' wide with a landscaped two lane winding bicycle/surry path beside it.

Along the boardwalk there are benches, several entertainment parks and stages, museums in historic buildings (Old Coast Guard Station and Wildfowl), hotel lawns and restaurants looking out on the ocean. Also, a small amusement park (with a larger one a block behind), a fishing pier, sometimes people surfing in the surfing area, sometimes horses for short rides (I think more outside the heat of summer on the horses), scuptures of things like large turtles and beach balls...great photo ops.

There are fireworks about once a week in the summer that go off from a barge at 20th St. at about 10 pm.

The usual tshirt/taffy/hermit crabs/souvenir shops are on Atlantic Ave, the street the oceanfront hotels front onto. On this street during the summer from 17th to 25th there are auditioned permitted performers...stiltwalkers, musicians, magicians, jugglers, etc.

There are events nearly every weekend on the beach and boardwalk.

So check out the fireworks schedule and events during your visit here:

If you want to be able to walk right off the beach to grab food or a drink, you are limited to the boardwalk area.

If you want less crowded, the residential area (north of boardwalk) where the hotels stop and the private residences start is the best bet, but you can't grab and drink and food.

Maybe hang out near the Cavalier- that is right where the boardwalk stop... So you will technically be right in the middle.

You could also hang out in front of the Wyndham Hotel- it is right in the middle of the residential area (kind of out of place with the other hotels). But it will be less crowded and you can grab a drink and food from the bar and use their restrooms.
