visiting Sperryville, VA

We will be staying near Harrisonburg, VA. Will it be worth the trip to Sperryville, VA just to visit and sightsee? No kids, just 2 old folks. Any other ideas to visit cute little towns, no museums; maybe easy hikes. Thanks Chuck and Rae

Sperryville is a small village along the road from D.C. to Shenandoah National Park. I see on this website that Sperryville has a vineyard and winery, which have been reviewed by travelers on this forum. The "Inn at Little Washington" is a few minutes from Sperryville - it's rated as one of the finest restaurants in the entire USA, or world.

Harrisonburg isn't far from "Luray Caverns" which is considered the best one of a half-dozen tourist caverns that are in Virginia. Dress warmly while there (or any other cavern tour). Shenandoah National Park is full of many hiking trails and you can review them all on http://www.hikingupward.com . Sophisticated Charlottesville is ranked on many lists as one of the finest small cities in the entire USA to live in, or retire to. It has the state university (more like an Ivy league-type), a pedestrian zone downtown, and the famous restored mountaintop home of Thomas Jefferson "Monticello". Staunton, VA has the outdoor Museum of American Frontier Culture, with reconstructed homesites of English, Irish, and German pioneer settlers. Many towns along Highway 11 have antique shops, especially Strasburg. There is an old-order Mennonite community just south of Harrisonburg. Even further south is Schuyler, VA, the inspiration for the beloved "Walton's" T.V. series.

If you are driving through Sperryville and you sneeze, you may miss it!

I am not sure the drive (distance) from Harrisonburg would be worth it, but if you are looking for a pretty drive through Luray, up and over Skyline Drive, and a place to find a cute shop or a few antique stores and some lunch, Sperryville would be fine.

If you are looking for a cute old town to spend a few hours walking and browsing, yeah, it isn't it.

Sperryville Emporium (if it is still there) has been an institution for years. Old Rag Mountain is a popular hike for Washingtonians, and Sperryville is a blow-through town to get to Old Rag, so it has been years since I have stopped in.

If you are into antiques, driving up and down Route 11 which parallels I-81 is good. New Market Virginia is a cute little town.
