Stay in Monterey or Carmel?

We are a family of 4 (two adults, two teen boys) on a road trip from LA to SF. Two nights in the Monterey area. Where should we stay -- Monterey or Carmel?

Do you have any criteria ? It is like asking We are going to Atlanta. Do we stay downtown on Peachtree or in Buckhead ?

Well lets try and see how to spin this. With kids perhaps Monterey may be more fun as Carmel has more B&Bs so from that perspective you may find Monterey to have more options and choices from the Monterey Plaza to the Portola to the Intercontinental to the Embassy Suites.

The cities are literally 5 mins apart so it does not matter

This question comes up several times a month. I have prepared a web page designed to help you answer that question. It describes the various lodging neighborhoods in some detail so you can find the location and types of lodgings that best suit your needs. www.montereypeninsula.info/guide/lodging.html

Generally speaking, Monterey is an urban environment with lots of activity. Carmel is a quiet forested village with lots of natural beauty at hand. Then there's Pacific Grove, which is more of a small town atmosphere also with lots of natural beauty.

Two teen boys = Monterey to me.

Carmel is more "artsy and romantic."

Thanks everyone -- I think we will stay in Monterey! We are also staying in Ragged Point and at Nick's Cove on other nights, so secluded and quiet will already be covered. I appreciate your input.

The Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa is a very nice place to stay in Monterey and is walking distance to the aquarium if you go there. There is also a nice property about 5 minutes away, right on the beach called The Best Western Beach Resort. Both places are very family-friendly.

Enjoy your time in Monterey! :)
