8 nights from AKL, Bay of Islands or Plenty or both?

I have 8 nights from Auckland in late March and was thinking of heading upto the Bay of Islands, but I'm also thinking about the Bay of Plenty area. Which is better? We've seen Wellington/Napier/Lake Taupo/Rotorua areas in the past.

We would be staying at B&B's/Motels and geerally like to take it pretty slow enjoying a couple of nights in each town where warranted. We enjoy taking short walks and seeing Natural sights, maybe taking a couple of tours such as kayaks etc.

Any advise would be greatly appericated.

Although it adds considerably to the mileage it would be possible to do both, 4 days each, but perhaps since you've already been to Rotorua you could swap your 4 days BoP for Coromandel Peninsula instead. It would be lovely in March.

Try whitianga. Scenic and pretty spot..I recommend Sandy Shores apartment if available.

Near new, Host Thelma is great and helpful. self contained clean and right opposite the beach. Only 5 minutes walk down to the marina and hotel which has great food ( salt bar & restaurant )

Alternately, Matapouri is a scenic beach only about 6 km north from Tutukaka, north region. About 35km from whangarei.

Not sure on accomodation at Matapouri. Tutukaka has hotel resort by the marina.

If you've already been to Taupo and Rotorua, heading up north could be interesting for you.

In the Bay of Islands you could do a boat trip on the bay, and see some of the historic sites such as the treaty house at Waitangi and some of the early European buildings in New Zealand. Then you could travel further north, go to Cape Reinga (the northernmost point in NZ) and visit Ninety Mile Beach. Returning to Auckland, you could travel down the west coast and look at the kauri forests near Dargaville.

That would easily take a good chunk out of your 8 days. The Bay of Islands cruise will probably take up most of one day, and Cape Reinga will be another whole day. With the remaining time, you could go to Waiheke Island, near Auckland, for a night or two. It is pretty and has some good wineries.
