2-3 days in Bay of Islands

I'll be travelling to Bay of Islands as part of a larger trip of New Zealand, and i''m wondering where I should spend my time. (lots of little towns, etc so I don't know where to go). I'm travelling by bus and on my own but i'm up for activities. (especially after a 30 hr plane ride)

Day 1 - I arrive in auckland at 6am. I have to go through customs, etc, then bus it up to Bay of Islands. I don't know where i'm going to stay yet, and i really won't plan much for this day because i'll be recouping from time difference/etc.

Day 2/3 - totally open!

Day 4 - leave to Rotorua at 8am

Thanks in advance!

Without a car you will definitely be best to stay in Paihia, walking distance to shops, restaurants, I site on the wharf where you can book all tours and activities, Waitangi treaty grounds, and ferry from the wharf over to Russell.

If you let us know your budget I can recommend some places to stay.

Is there information online for different tours and activities available in that area on the 'wharf'?
