3 days in Bay of Islands

Looking at driving from Auckland and spending 3 days in Bay of Islands area. 6 tavellers would prefer central location for accomodation as opposed to moving daily. Any suggstions for location ( hotel or house) and must see sights ,distances etc.

One place to consider is Russell Cottages, which have 3 bedroom cottages in their complex, its a really nice place, and Russell is a lovely small historic town.

In some ways Russell is a slightly more awkward place to base yourself than Paihia, as you have to take a car ferry to get to and from the Paihia side of things with your car, but it is a very short 5 minute crossing and I think is worth the effort.

If you want to get to Paihia without your car, it is a 5 minute passenger ferry ride and a 2 minute walk from Russell Cottages...

Good alternative to Russell township is Paihia and which is central to everything including sights, dining and facilities. A rental property might appeal for your goup - check out www.holidayhomes.co.nz for BOI options.

Hi Steven,

Where to base yourself depends on what you want to do in the Bay. You need to be on the Paihia side to see Waitangi, Haruru Falls and Kerikeri and if you are looking for a bit of nightlife. Russell, however, as the first reviewer mentioned, is a small, historic town with "old time" character, lovely waterfront and many beach walks and scenic and historic spots. The tour to Cape Rienga leaves from Paihia, but all the boat cruises will pick you up from either Paihia or Russell.

Enjoy your Bay of Islands trip,

Ron and the Freewind crew.

We were in Paihia a few years back and had a very nice stay at the Blue Pacific Apartments just outside the main hub and opposite the beach.

I highly recommend a day in the bay and a trip to Waitangi treaty grounds where you can also catch a Maori show of songs and dances if you don't do this elsewhere.

Going up the east coast and back via the west is also a good idea.Driving across to the west you will go through Opononi on the Hokianga harbour and then drive south through the Waipoua forest where you can see Tane Mahuta,NZ's tallest Kauri tree.

There is an excellent kauri gum museum in Matakohe which is most interesting.
