bike rentals

I was wondering if one of you experts could recommend a good place to rent bikes for 5 days while we are staying on Ka'anapali beach?

Thanks so much!

Hylasgirl, we're in complete agreement. Being able to walk and bike to restaurants and shopping while we're on vacation has become a priority for us. The good news is that there have been some rumors that they are looking at putting in a bike path connecting Kanapali, Lahaina, and other areas and closing Lahaina streets to cars during the afternoon and night.

To be honest, unless and until, the local government can solve all the dozens of problems plaguing the good folks who live there day to day, I doubt that bike lanes will become a priority. Just sayin'

The bike lane at Kaanapali has been dug up 3 times in the last couple of years. The final repaving has not been done yet probably because they are now digging up the roadway again, at night.

Plus you need to be a very defensive rider. People are lost and driving and looking for road signs.

Many vehicles coast thru red lights when turning right.

A sidewalk from Kaanapali to almost the Front St. entrance to Lahaina was completed last spring. From the frontage road in front of the Whalers shopping center you go past the Mariott and Hyatt and navigate a couple of parking lots behind the hotel to pick up the sidewalk at Hanakao'o beach park. You have to go slow and give way to pedestrians but it is a much more enjoyable ride than being on the main road. There is just a short stretch of main road to get to the Front St exit.

For such a tourist oriented area the bicycling situation for families is kind of pitiful. I guess the roads were never built for bicycling to begin with and it is expensive to build bike paths. The Sugar Cane Train tracks would be a good place for a bike path, just a suggestion. You can do a lot of bicycling on Maui but you will be dealing with cars.

Next time you go to maui consider staying in Wailea or Kihei. Lots of bike lanes there good riding all along the coast, the further south you go the better it gets. Boss Frogs in Kihei does good rentals
