Rent a Car for the Day

Hello. My friend and I will taking the ferry from St John to Jost for the day during our trip in May. A few places that we would like to go are, Foxy's, Ivan's, Soggy Dollar, and the bubbly Pool. Will we need to rent a car for the day, or take taxis? I know we can walk the trail from Soggy's to Ivan's, but I am not sure how far apart everything else is. Any help would be appreciated!!

dana, you're pretty much going as far as the road will take you on JVD and I suggest renting a car for the day - it will be more convenient for you. Here's the bubbly pool

Hi, thank you so much for the video, it is awesome! I can not wait to see it in person. I think renting the car is the best idea too. We are debating on staying the night, so we have more time to enjoy the island. Thanks for your help.

You are welcome! We love St. John; however, I think it is a great idea to spend the night on JVD if possible. We've done a day trip from St. John to JVD, and you can do everything you would like to do in a day, but you'll have a more relaxed pace if you are spending the night. We've gone from day trips to 3 to 5 nights on JVD. St. John doesn't have anything like the on or near the beach restaurants and bars on JVD. One of the best meals we've had any where in the Caribbean was a dinner on the beach at Seddy's One Love on White Bay. http://www.onelovebar.com/ Toward the other end of White Bay, Ivan's has a beach barbeque, I think on Thursdays http://www.ivanscampground.com/ I don't think Seddy's serves his beach dinner every night, either, so, if you decide to spend the night, you might plan it when one of these restaurants is open, and make reservations. We've also had a very good dinner at Sandcastle on White Bay. Foxy's Taboo, on the road to the bubbly pool, also serves very good food.

have a great trip, alashas http://www.youtube.com/user/honeymoon2

ps, reservations for dinner are highly recommended. And, I forgot to mention that all 3 restaurants in Little Harbour also serve very good food, and are an interesting change of pace from White Bay and Great Harbour. At Abe's on Little Harbour, we've moved a picnic table to their dock and ate over the water.

We love St John, and have been vacationing there for about 7 years. I have been to Jost 3 times and love it there also. I have only taken day trips, so I think it is time for an overnighter. We are thinking about staying in a cabin at Ivan's since we will only be there one night. Have you ever stayed in or seen on of the cabins? Thanks for the tips on the restaurants! We will be sure to make reservations for dinner. I love your idea of moving the table onto the doc!

I have toured Ivan's campground but not stayed there - basic, no frills, shared kitchen, just steps from the beach. Some photos:

We have friends who stayed in Ivan's efficiency, a room on the bottom level of his villa and a short walk up the road behind the campground, that might be an option:

If you snorkel, walk to the far left end of White Bay, and snorkel along the outcropping out to the point. We snorkeled with this huge school of fry at the point

And then saw this good size turtle on the way in

Looking forward to your trip report. By the way, on our trips to JVD, we've enjoyed meeting folks who were staying at Ivan's. Everyone shares the kitchen, refrig, showers, etc, and, most of all, White Bay beach.

Here's a shot of Ivan's from one of White Bay Villas hillside units (our favorite place on JVD):

If you look at the beach past Ivan's there is a rock outcropping that you have to walk over to get to the rest of WB. There is a trail over it, and I recommend a flashlight for that. Also, I wouldn't attempt that part of the beach with bare feet - flip flops are ok, but shoes with a little more support are even better.

You can thank the weather today in central VA for my prompt responses (:>) It is coming down like this again
