Why do so many people try to share a water taxi?

My friends and I are going to Jost in March and we were told the ferry from St Thomas to St John is One-way, $6.00/Adults + $2.50/piece for luggage/boxes. and leaves hourly, and the ferry from St Johns to Yost is $70 pp round trip. Why do so many people share water taxis if the price is set at $70 pp?

Also is there a website with the water taxi scheduled times? I am having no luck finding that information in the forums.

As far as I know, there is not a website that lists the various water taxis from STT to JVD. Here is the website for a popular one:

Here's the ferry schedule:

I'm not aware of an hourly ferry between St. John and JVD and one of the main reasons people prefer to take a water taxi from STT to JVD is the convenience of using one boat to get to JVD that leaves within a reasonably short length of time after you've arrived to STT. We always travel to JVD from Tortola, and can't give you any more specifics about STT.

have a great trip, alashas http://www.youtube.com/user/honeymoon2

There seems to be confusion between ferries and water taxis. Ferries run on a set schedule (more or less) and charge a set price. You hire a water taxi, same as a land taxi, to go where you want, when you want. The price is usually for the boat, regardless of the number of passengers, so people share to keep the cost/person down.

So if a ferry costs $70 pp from red hook to Jost how much would a water taxi cost?

I just took the dolphin water taxi from STT to JVD and it was $114 for adults and free for kids under 5.

It was a good way to get to JVD.

Thanks, Mr. Pappy, glad to hear about your good experience with the Dolphin Water Taxi. Did you pay $114 for each adult, or is the total amount?

$114 each. It left redhook at 8:45 am and left White Bay JVD for return to STT around 4pm or so. (a little foggy after so many painkillers)

I see, so, is the $114 each one way or round trip?

Thanks, that's reasonable, especially when you can save time and hassle with a couple of ferries each way.

Take care, alashas http://www.youtube.com/user/honeymoon2
