Moving to Palma Nova - Help needed!!

My fRiend and I are going to be going to Palma Nova in June of next year, we are going to visit the area for 2 weeks as we have visited the area for a week and are thinking of moving there, but I cannnot seem to find any long term accommodation, it all seems to be holiday apartments and very pricey, is it best to look for a long term let and jobs once I get there?

Do I need a visa in order to move and work in the Palma Nova area??

If anyone has done this or will be doing something similar, and could offer me any advice it would be very much appreciated!!

Thanks xxx

Cant speak for an "English Enclave" like Palma Nova, but generally...

Best place to find long term lets is in the Papers - Mallorca Daily Bulletin or the Spanish Papers (especially Diario del Mallorca if you speak a bit of Spanish), and there is also http://mallorca.loquo.com/ which is the Spanish answer to Craigslist. If you have transport there are areas around Palma significantly cheaper to rent houses. Having said that, if you are coming over here then two weeks should give you time to look for something...

Assuming you are British/Irish you dont need a work permit or visa, but unless you have some specialist skills (eg a Nurse, Languages, you are a hottie etc) you will be competing against a huge volume of S.American and North African Labour for relatively few long term jobs, coupled with the fact Spain is about to go into four consecutive quaters of Recession. You will need a NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjeros) number, but they are very easy to get hold of.

Finca gives some good advice. Palma Nova / Magalluf are more expensive places to live, but there is more seasonal work, so the convenience may outweigh the bit extra you have to pay. The bus service to Palma more or less finishes at 10.30, so if you are intending to work in a Bar / Restaurant, you would really need your own transport, and there's not a lot of parking in Palma Nova.

Beware the "Agents" that advertise in English speaking papers as they charge you a month's rent just as their "finder's fee" and beware the cheap "seasonal let's as you rarely get your deposit back!

June is not a good time to rent, as most of the better places have gone - March / April is better, and if you're moving over, then try and get the rent a bit cheaper in the winter, or negotiate a good all round rental (which will be difficult to do at the beginning of the season).

Son Caliu is quite near to Palma Nova, and there are some nice rental places there.

Hope this helps - PM me if you need more info.
