Anyone who has been to Mijas Pueblo cannot fail to see the the taxis burros.
What is your opinion of them Benny?
Should they stay or should they go?
I think they should stay. The burro taxis are what made Mijas famous after all.
I, for one, think they should go. There are too many, stood about all day in the hot sun. The length of time proposed in the article for summer, 8.30 to 9.30pm is far too long.
On the other hand, I suppose the donkeys wouldnt exist if the owners couldnt work them.
A wander around the less central parts of Mijas Pueblo can be enlightening as to what happens to the burros during their R & R time, hence my question.
I think most visitors could appreciate Mijas without the poor burros.
I watched a programme once on a donkey sanctuary (not the one at Nerja) who were keeping an eye on the donkeys. I'm not sure though if they still do.
Personally I don't have a problem with them being there, they are part of the character of Mijas but I don't think that they should be used to carry around people over a certain weight! I'm not being weightist (!) as I am overweight but I hate seeing very large adults sitting astride the donkeys and treating it all as a joke as they parade around the village.
The donkey owners are earning a living and I appreciate that but I do think it would be better to restrict the rides to children over a certain age. Also, they do appear to be out in the sun too long and some look very underfed and dehydrated.
Sorry - for me they have to go!
Why should poor Donkeys be expected to carry the bodies of overweight tourists up narrow/winding streets?
To me it is cruel and the sole reason we do not visit Mijas.
I agree with Campolady ,a similar thing was happening in Santorini , I signed a petiton to get them stopped ,if they cannot be stopped then make sure there is weight limit on who they carry .
