Fonte Santa in May

We're looking for a quiet, authentic and reasonable beach get-away in Algarve that is close to Faro airport, and also offers train/bus connection to Lisbon.

1) is it safe to walk from Fonte Santa to Trafal beach at night during May?

2) we plan to self cater, but also want to go out for breakfast occasionally. Is Marufo open for breakfast? What other options are available?

3) how much will it be to take taxi to Loule train station, Vilamoura for dinner, or Quarteira town centre?

4) will we like Fonte Santa, or shall we look at Tavira for a beach vacation instead? We will not rent a car so have to rely on public transportation.

1) No, it's not safe. The roads/tracks there have no lights.

And after sunset you don't want to go to any beach apart from Quarteira itself or you'll encounter our drugs police force and they won't be nice! :)

2) Marufo opens 7 days a week, for lunch and dinner (no breakfast)

3) Taxi to Loule train station will be around 10 euro one way, to Vilamoura 6 euro one way, to Quarteira town center about 3 euro.

Fonta Santa without a car will not be easy. Tavira would be a better choice.

There are buses along the main road at Fonte Santa to Quarteira etc but they don't run late in the evenings and are very infrequent at weekends. Fonte Santa is the location for the weekly market on Wednesdays which attracts hordes of tourists.

The beaches at Tavira are on an island to which you can only get to by ferry or water taxi. In May, only the ferry from a place called Quatros Aguas operates and that is a mile from the town. There are no buses out that way. If you are considering Tavira, best ask a few questions in that forum.

Thanks, Fthw and Cubsur.

We are considering Quarteira because we were told that Portuguese vacation there. I didn't find any accomodation in town that are family-owned B&B and have a swimming pool, so we are leaning towards Vila Belinha. There is a supermarket within walking distance so we can self-cater. 3 Euro taxi from Quarteira isn't bad at all - considering we will have to pay double for hotels on the beach.

Will you recommend Vila Belinha? I have read the reviews but still undecided!

I know where it is but have never been inside. It's 1 minute from a big supermarket (Lidl).

The supermarket is open 7 days a week.

Sorry I do not know Vila Belinha but if the map location I saw is accurate there is a large LIDL supermarket across the road. LIDL is a well known European chain of discount, no frills, stores. You should be able to get everything you need there.

Quarteira is a very popular place for local people to have a day on the beach. The beach is long, wide and sandy. You can take a bus from Fonte Santa, outside LIDL, into town where they go to Quarteira bus station which is about 150 metres from the beach. A taxi is about 4 Euros on weekdays, more at weekends.
