Hi, why would they make you share a table? Are you travelling with a tour group?

Most restaurants you will have a table to yourselves if you are not in a tour group. A few very old-fashioned trattoria/restaurants may still have long tables for 8 or even 10 where you just sit where there is a vacant seat, but not many of this type left nowadays.

Some hotels still do this but they tend to be the very low end of the market ones.

I would let them know in advance that you have no intention of doing this.

If they don't state this is their way of working on their website or on your booking form then you can refuse outright to accept this.

When going on a trip one of the main things we like is to do the touristic thing and also meet new people and make new friends. We travel with a tour normally and found this problem many times. A couple with one or two children would want to sit on thie own. We feel like we are the odd people as they don't want to sit with us. There is nothing wrong with sharing a table at all unless the couple are going to moan and groan the whole time. We had a couple sharing with us who made a big fuss as there was no water at the table. This doesn't exist anymore. So we had to listen to the waterless table throughout the whole meal. But on most hotels I found that you are shown to a table but if you prefer not to they will accomodate.
