Travelling from Sciacca to Marinella di Selinunte

We are in Sciacca in Oct 2010 and want guidance about getting from Sciacca to Marinella di Selinunte as a day trip. We are not hiring a car.

Even though it's not far, doing this as a day trip is tough because of the very limited schedules. For one thing, don't even try to do it on a Sunday.

Between Sciacca and Castelvetrano, there are three buses in each direction from Monday through Saturday:

www.autoservizilumia.it

www.autolineelumia.it/orari.php…

I'd take the first bus in the morning at 7:55, arriving in Castelvetrano at 8:45.

Between Castelvetrano and Marinella di Selinunte, there are several Salemi buses:

www.autoservizisalemi.it

www.autoservizisalemi.it/corse_urbane.php…

It is very unfortunate that the schedules of the two operators are not coordinated, resulting in long connection times in Castelvetrano (in the morning) and consequently a short layover in Marinella di Selinunte. Therefore, it may be necessary to take a taxi from Castelvetrano to Marinella in the morning, to gain additional time. That way, you would arrive at Marinella around 9:15, and you could take the 13:30 bus back to Castelvetrano, in time to connect to the 14:10 bus back to Sciacca. Four hours is enough to visit the ruins at Selinunte.

You also need to re-check these schedules again closer to your departure date, and finally locally in Sciacca. The Salemi bus driver will tell you WHERE in Castelvetrano to alight to take the connecting Lumia bus to Sciacca (bar Selinus on Via Marinella???).

Play around with the schedules to see if you can put together a better combination of departure and arrival schedules for the two bus operators.

The Salemi bus deposits you next to the old rail station in Marinella (tracks have been covered over), approx. 300 yards from the ticket office to the ruins of Selinunte. There is a large bar/restaurant across from the ticket office. I've taken this bus myself, so I know the routine. On the return, get to the bus stop several minutes before the advertised departure time, just in case the schedules have changed by 5-15 minutes.

FYI: Selinunte is a much easier day trip out of Palermo (frequent Salemi bus service to Castelvetrano), or out of Trapani/Marsala/Mazara del Vallo (frequent trains to Castelvetrano). In particular, it's possible to reach Castelvetrano in time to take the connecting Salemi bus to Marinella at 8:15 a.m. This bus gets to Marinella at 8:45 a.m., just in time to be the very first visitors to the Selinunte Archeological Park.

Selinunte can also be a day trip out of Sciacca, as noted in the previous posting, but the bus schedules are much more limited, and consequently more challenging.

Welcome to Sicily TJMBrisbane!

Many towns in Southwest Sicily don’t have train stations and these towns are only served by buses.

GAC has offered excellent advice. If you’ll be in Palermo, consider an excursion to Selinunte from Palermo, or arrange a taxi from castelvetrano to Selinunte, and if at all possible, hire a car in this area.
