driving from Salerno to Alberobello

We are planning on renting a car in Salerno after several days on the Amalfi coast. We plan to drive to Alberobello and then Matera. Is this drive OK? How are the roads? Any advice?

Yes, the roads are very OK and it's a lovely drive. You'll use www.viamichelin.com the wonderful European route planner and its useful driving time/distance estimates, and of its two suggested alternatives, we've tended to drive the A16; a beautiful fast highway which sweeps through low mountain country and is relatively empty (with the exception of th first bit near Naples and the later stages near Bari). Add time for stopovers to viamichelin's three and a half hour's estimate as this assumes fast non-stop travel.

But unless you're in a hurry - (and why be?) - a better route might be to adapt the second viamichelin option; taking the fast A3/S407 past Eboli (read Levi's book 'Christ stopped at Eboli' for a picture of the poverty of the south in the mid 20th Century) and Potenza. Then, as the real joy of motoring in the borders of Puglia and Basilicata is to take its quieter back-roads through limestone plateau landscapes with drystone walls and olive terraces, to peel off to visit Matera and its cave dwellings, rather than the coastal highway past industrial Taranto.
