June 2012

We are in the first stages of planning our holiday to Ischia next year, the hotel is booked (returning to the Gran Paradiso in Casamicciola. We will be spending two weeks there but thought we might break up the journey home and stay a couple of nights on the mainland to take in Pompeii and Herculaneum. I am not sure about staying in Naples. Can anyone recommend some where to stay that will not involve too much travelling to either the airport or Pompeii?

Sounds very much how we felt on our first few visits here - that while Naples might be great for a city-break, it wouldn't fit very well into summer vacation plans?

And after 8 years on Ischia, and going over many many times, that view hasn't changed one bit!

Back when holidaying here we'd have a day on the island (either on the beach or exploring) between each visit 'ashore' - and a host of interesting places are within fairly easy daytrip range:

Although the cost of the ferries and hydrofoils have crept upwards, you could nonetheless consider visiting those sites from here - and there's a bus service to Pompei from very near where they dock, as described in this thread...

Or of course it's not far to the Circumvesuviana's stations... either the terminus at Porta Nolana, or the one below Napoli Centrale station in Piazza Garibaldi... but we prefer the bus option!

From here it costs a little more, and takes a while longer - but then you get a sunbathing sea-cruise thrown in, and can spend the evening and night back here on Ischia, rather than in the city!

Otherwise, Sorrento is the obvious alternative, however it's Sorrento...

Pompei town I'd not bother with either, but how about Vietri sul Mare?

It's a very pleasant little town, the first on the Amalfi Coast after Salerno and the only one there to have a railway station. The line's rather slow but has trains that run from Naples, through the stations of Ercolano-Portici (about 1 1/2 - 2 km from the Herculaneum site) and Pompei (less than a km to the site), taking a little over an hour to get there...

Those train ickets cost 4 Euro, although the journey could be covered with the use of the 3 day Artecard (*).

For more of Vietri, see...

It would make for a rather slow, but not very complicated, trip back to the airport - that would be OK as long as you've not an early check-in time?

From Casamicciola, you've a very easy ferry ride to Pozzuoli - which is definitely worth a look, if you've not already been? Try:

... and:

(*) For the Artecard, see....

The €27 "Tutta la Regione" version covers 3 days, so would do for Naples/Vietri, Vietri to the two sites and admission to both... and also, on the 3rd day, Vietri to airport by train and then Alibus?

For some good background info, see...

And, for the Sorrento and AC - although it's well due for an update (so do crosscheck any times, prices etc - and ignore all references to the 'Metro del Mare'), there's a useful 'Travel Directory' that can be downloaded from the official tourism website, here...

...or, directly, here..

OK so far?

Thank you for all the infomation, some good ideas that we will consider. We are quite happy to spend 2 whole weeks on the island. it is so gorgeous and travelling on the buses really easy. The joy of booking hotel and travel independently means we can be flexible, so adding a couple of days onto the end of our holiday to take in Pompeii will not be a problem.
