Ischia, and Italy, on the telly...

For those with some Italian - and anyone happy with just the pictures - as part of their 'On Demand' system, the state broadcaster here (RAI) have an entire 90 minute episode from their wonderful "Linea Blu" series (first shown in July, and all about Ischia and Procida, and the recently-created Marine Protection Area that surrounds the two islands) available here...

Travel porn at its finest - and hopefully available to those whose ISP isn't based in Italy: perhaps someone could let me know?

Peter

PS - for a wider view around the country, either use the "Cerca" search box or look further down the page where, for instance, there's this - on Ostia and the ruins of the nearby hexagonal harbour at Portus..

Otherwise, perhaps start with one of these two weekly series...

"Linea Blu" - the sea and coasts

"Linea Verde" - the countryside

PPS - If they're too long for TA, copy and paste the above links to your browser's address line!

As those links worked, let's try the ones for the individual series' webpages...

Thank you so much Peter - absolutely beautiful. You don't need to understand Italian to appreciate your wonderful island, the pictures speak for themselves!

Extremely cheering for me -- on Dec. 26th we rec'd 13.5 inches (35 cm) of snow, I've been stuck at my house ever since, roads are a sheet of ice..........

I've been to the 'Bay of Napoli area' 3 times in the past 5 years, basing myself in Sorrento at Hotel Dania. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to boat over to Ischia either trip. I'm hoping to include it on my 8th annual trip to Italy in September tho, already started my research, with Ischia at the top of the list.

In 2009, went on a day trip to Baia and Cumae area, awesome. Paestum...what's can you say.......

You asked if we could view it outside of Italy - well here in the UK it wants me to install Microsoft Silverlight first to be able to view it. Never heard M S.

Thank you peter!!

Microsoft Silverlight is a fairly common media viewer. I've had to install it before from very reputable people - the US broadcaster NBC always uses it for its online Olympics coverage.

Mrs T, thanks for that!

And also for letting me know - for the first time - that it had been worth installing Silverlight when Microsoft's routine updates first suggested I do it!

I've had it in for some time now and - other than occasionally having updates to do - it's been no problem, so I can't imagine there's any reason for you not to follow suit.

Hope you'll enjoy the programmes - hours of entertainment!

Thank you for the link Peter, what a wonderful programme. I have been able to view it okay without downloading anything extra.

We will be in Sorrento in April - I haven't started my holiday research yet, but is it fairly easy to visit either island (just for the day) from Sorrento? We were intending to hopefully visit Ischia but now rather like the look of Procida - any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks again for the link, I am looking forwarding to working my way through all the films!

Glad you're enjoying them - hours of entertainment!

Although Procida is an ideal size for a day's visit, it's rather more difficult to get to, as the direct hydrofoil from Sorrento (09:40 next year, apparently, and €17 each way) arrives here without stopping in on its way past!

And, at that time of day (about 10:30), there aren't then any easy connections from our ports to Procida - so it would probably be necessary to train (cheap but slow) or hydrofoil (€11) over to Naples first, and then continue on from there (approx €9 by boat, or €12 by hydrofoil).

One way of seeing both places, although rather briefly, is on this Thursdays-only tour, which makes a pick-up at Sorrento... They're not yet saying when they'll start next year, however it may well be later than April, but click on the Union Jack symbol here for some English details...

www.microcrociere.it/crociera_verde.html

The other ways to do it would involve having a night here - either on your way in or out, or perhaps by popping over with just a toothbrush and a change of clothes, to see one island each day, returning to Sorrento the second afternoon?

I've previously given a few suggestions for daytrip visits from Sorrento, such as this one...

Personally though, I'd try not to miss the Walton gardens...

Thank you so much for all that wonderful information Peter, and what amazing photographs you have. It looks as though we will be best sticking to our original plan to visit Ischia. We first visited Sorrento about 30 years ago in the middle of a 'Romantic Italy' Tour and were so weary from all the travelling we didn't really get to see very much of the area. On this trip we are hoping to rectify that. Thanks again for your help.
