Hi there again!

Visiting Sorrento first would certainly fit in much better with the transport available since only one direct connection runs between the two places - unless of course a new service start up by next September!

From spring until late autumn the Alilauro line runs a hydrofoil over from Sorrento to Ischia each morning - it leaves at about 09:30, but obviously do check nearer the time for next year's schedule.

There's no equivalent service in the other direction, although that one does the return trip to Sorrento in the late afternoon - for the current details, click on the 'Orari del Golfo di Napoli...' link here...

www.alilauro.it/index.php?lingua=english

Their fleet can be seen here - they're great big things, not little boats at all..

At our end at least, there are official porters to assist with your baggage - if you don't mind paying the few Euro that will cost....

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

In your particular circumstances, staying right down in the old Borgo of Ischia Ponte would have some disadvantages since - with the road closed for some of the day, and each evening - it would involve having to walk in and out on many of the occasions when you wanted to go anywhere else! There are a few hotels near the entrance to Ponte, but after that they're mostly some way from where there's any great collection of restaurants.

For an idea of what the two areas are like, take a look here...

The porters are based at the port - they bring luggage ashore off the hydrofoils, place it on a cart or trolley and take it to your car, taxi or other transport.

Most hotels will arrange pickups if required - and a very few still have their own people to do so - although I've not noticed any of them being allowed onboard to fetch off people's bags. Instead you'd be met when on the quay by someone with a name board who would then help you with your bags to the car, and drive you to your accomodation.

There are also transfer firms who could presumably also arrange that you're fetched from your hotel to the port in Sorrento... the first that comes to mind is this firm, although Sorrento/Ischia doesn't appear to be one of their standard offerings!

It's just, only just, possible to see the Castello from near the harbour in Ischia Porto... if you find somewhere high enough to look over the top of everything that's in the way!

This picture for instance is a slightly telephoto shot, taken when standing by the rooftop swimming pool of the Aragona Palace Hotel....

and this one's from higher up still, the view from near the church of Sant'Alessandro, on the far side of the port..

4. Re: ischia ponte versus ischia porte

it all sounds wonderful...maybe the ischia porto is best then

since easier to walk to restaurants etc from the hotel

will have 17 days...so thinking of naples airport

to sorrento by taxi..will be 2nd time in sorrento...maybe staying 5 nights.

then perhaps trying the sorrento boat at 9:30

to ischia porto and staying in ischia for 10 days...

thinking of the last 2 days someplace closer to the airport

to make returning back easier...dont like the dirty city type areas

so cant stay in naples..any suggestions on a quaint nice place

for 2 nights ..that will make the taxi drive to the airport easier.

would have to commute from ischia to this location.?

any sugg ? thanks

Prior to our move to Ischia, we used to come for maybe a fortnight at a time - but would then go off-island for day trips or longer (which of course involved boats and hydrofoils) and got to many of the places shown here....

If some of your party aren't keen on doing excursions of that sort, I wonder if our 18 square miles - about 3/4 the area of Manhattan Island - might prove a little limiting over a 10 day stay.... what do you think?

We stayed in ischia Ponte for 3 days in May 2008. When we needed to go to the port when we had our luggage, we took a taxi and it was no problems. When we went to the port or the main bsu stationnear the port, or the shopping near there, we sjust took the bus. They ran frequently. There were plenty of good restuaratsn with walking distance all along the area fron near the port to the Castel.

We stayed at a budget selection Hotel Europa.

The biggest probelm you might have with day trips is that the transprt fron the Beverello port to the main train station at Piazza Garibaldi. The Alibus stop is in back of Castel Nuovo and seems like it moves around depending on what construction is goin on this year. You can take a Taxi to the train station, but the taxi drivers in Naples are the most corrupt that I've seen and you have to get an estimate of what your trip will cost before you get inside. There is supposed to be a legal limit to the ride between the port and the train station (something like 10.5 euro) but the taxi drivers act like they have never heard of that.

You could easily spend 5-7 days on Ischia shopping, eating, hiking, and seeing the sights there on the island.
