Hiring Car and Driver to take us from Rome to Atripalda

We are going to be in Rome in early October and would like to hire a car and driver to take us to Atripalda for a day to see my mother's ancestral home. Does anyone know where to arrange this and approximate cost? There would be five of us going.

It would cost a small fortune to hire a car and driver to take you to Atripalda from Rome. The drive is about 2 1/2 hours each way.

Atripalda is right next to Avellino, where there is a train station. You can get there from Rome, changing trains in Benevento. You could get a taxi from there to Atripalda, and make an appointment for the driver to pick you up later and take you back to the station.

Even with five people, I'm sure it would be cheaper to take the train, especially if you buy discounted tickets well in advance. You can get tickets from Rome to Benevento for 9 euros each, or 18 euros round trip. The tickets from there to Avellino are very inexpensive, although I don't know the exact price.

The only problem might be fitting five people into a taxi. You might want to inquire in the Campania forum about hiring a minivan and driver to meet you at the Avellino (or Benenvento) station to take you to Atripalda.

You can see the train schedules and fares here:

It may be too early to see prices for your dates in October; they sell tickets only four months in advance. Pick a date in early October to see what kinds of prices are available for advance purchase. These tickets sell out quickly, though, and they are totally nonrefundable. The tickets from Benevento to Avellino are on cheap regional trains, and you should just buy those tickets at the station (either in Rome or Benevento). The prices never change for those, and they never sell out. The regional tickets have to be stamped in a yellow machine near the track before you board the train.
