The 2010 Rainy Season Weather Thread

Just thought I'd start this to keep anyone coming here over the next 3 months up to date with how the weather has been.

If you check forecasts for Koh Chang you'll see they pretty much all show a symbol that is a combination of thunderstorm, sunshine and rain and a 50% chance of rain, meaning pretty much anything could happen on any day and that doesn't help much.

There haven't been any really awful days so far although there have been a few days with torrential rain but limited to a few hours only. And there have even been some rather nice days.

The pattern recently has been pretty heavy rain very early morning which clears up after breakfast - around 10am. Then the sun comes out and the afternoons and evenings are, on the whole, pretty good. Or bright sunshine at sunrise and then it clouds over with a couple of hours rain and then the sun reappears again.

There are also isolated heavy showers on some days but these dont last too long, the clouds come in, the rain comes down, and 20 minutes later it clears up again.

Right now the sun is shining and the sea is pretty calm, safe for swimming.

Would be nice if it would be true what Ian wrote. Maybe it was so very different in Klong Prao than in Kai Bae, not even 5 km apart. Just yesterday it did rain all day long. And there have been so many nasty days in the past month that many people fled the island. I know from last years weather thread that Ian tends to polish it up. Chances for rain where around 95% on most days last month. There was also very little sunshine over the past weeks. The days were mostly gray if not raining at all.

There were quite a few days with a bit of sunshine in the morning, but on most days the show was over around 10 am and the rest of the days were gray,

It is sunny right now but the main road is still wet all over.

The weather can be different in different area of the island, that's for sure but none of the people staying at our place have complained about it so far and most comment it isn't as wet as they expected it to be.

Readers can decide just how bad the weather is today for themselves as I took these photos 15 minutes ago i.e. around 11.30am, July 5th : http://www.twitpic.com/22kw0x and http://www.twitpic.com/22ky4m

Weather in Thailand can be very localised, even here in Bangkok, where one side of the street can get heavy rain while the other side can be dry. So, I think both posters are right in their own locations.

Another bright day today with about 70% clouds and building up. Unfortunately one sunny day does not make a summer.

I can see easily from Kai Bai all the way down Klong Prao Beach to Chai Chet. Over all, the general weather on the west coast is the same.

Another very good, dry day yesterday but clouding over this morning, looks like normal weather will return soon.

There was a 10 minute shower and a few rolls of thunder a couple of days ago but the first very heavy rain for 5 days fell late last night.

It's a bit cloudy but still plenty of sunshine this morning though. The sea was pretty rough yesterday afternoon, the waves weren't so high but big swells offshore. Seems to have calmed down now.

The water is really clear around the islands off Kai Bae and Klong Prao now - much better than in high season and good for snorkelling. Well worth taking a kayak out there.

Just had another couple of days of sunshine & clouds - not too hot either. All in all, very pleasant weather. And the sea is still far clearer than in high season.

Just had another few days of very nice weather. There was some heavy rain early one morning for a couple of hours and there have been a few showers. But there has also been plenty of sunshine every day and dive companies are reporting great diving conditions and excellent visibility.

However "Tropical Storm Conson" is on the way, currently it is over the South China Sea off Vietnam, but most of Thailand will feel the effects over the next 3 days with heavy rain forecast for a lot of the country - in particular the north and east ( where we are) The rain is starting now and there's been quite a bit of thunder in the past half hour.

Bit of a grey, damp morning. Cant imagine there will be too many people bagging the sunbeds by the pool today. It's time to finish the latest Dan Brown you picked up in the airport for days like this.
