UVA Football - Parking

We will be visiting Charlottesville for the first time and are plan to see a UVA football game while there. Can anyone provide information about the parking and tailgating policy. We are unfamiliar with the area. I'm hoping that the stadium has a public parking area as opposed to just season ticket holders.

Thanks

May be too late if you were there this past weekend. You can park near uhall, or Fontaine research park if you get there early. There is also parking along Jefferson Park Ave., between cherry avenue and Fontaine ave. both on street as well as houses/churches that sell parking spots for $10-$20.

1) The closest general public parking areas are the Central Grounds, Emmet/Ivy, and UVa Health System South garages. Central Grounds is closest and fills up early. Both Emmet/Ivy and the South garage are about a 15 minute walk to the stadium. These three garages open for game day parking three to four hours before kick-off, and parking costs $10.

2) Free parking is available on a first come, first served basis at the Fontaine Research Park, University Hall, and John Paul Jones Arena lots. Those three lots open three hours before kick-off.

3) Free parking is also available on North Grounds, first come, first served.

4) There is a shuttle for people with disabilities at the lot at The Park. Handicapped placard is required to park there. The shuttle for people with disabilities starts running two hours before game time.

5) Plan your route. State troopers close intersections leading to reserved parking and allow only people with athletic foundation reserved permits to pass; e.g., you cannot turn left onto Alderman Rd. from Ivy Rd. (US 250).

6) Directions to the lots can be found at virginia.edu/parking/…visitors.html

and a map is available at virginia.edu/parking/documents/maps/Football…

Hope you have a great time! Wahoo Wah!

We should arrive at least 3 hours before kickoff so we'll head to central grounds and try our luck in one of the garages. If its a 15 minute walk to the stadium from there, what about tailgating though? Do folks congregate with food and drinks somewhere central where they can put things back in their vehicle before entering the stadium?

You cannot tailgate at the paid lots listed above. People do try to get away with it, but campus police do troll the lots to stop tailgaters. Essentially the University only allows tailgaiting on University property in the VAF donor lots. However, there are also charity lots at the banks on the corner of Ivy and Alderman, though I think they charge $20 for those lots, and you can tailgate there. Alumni Hall has pay as you go tailgating, including beer and possibly wine, and has a band and activities for kids. 3 hours before the game the central grounds garage will likely have a waiting line, since people park there to go into the bookstore, but the other lots should be ok.

Thanks luvcuracao, that helps a lot (pun intended). I pulled up google maps for the Ivy an Alderman intersection and noted the two banks and St Marks church on each side. Since we'd like to tailgate, how early would you think you need to get to those lots before they fill? We are driving almost 4 hours to get to Charlottesville.

Thanks in advance!

We usually get there about 2 1/2 to 3 hours before the game and those bank lots already have cars in them as we pass by. However, it looks like they still have space since there are signs still directing people in. So, you may be alright with 3 hours, but make sure you give yourself time to get to the stadium and get through the gate as well. Expect it will be quite crowded Sat.

how about parking for a Motorcoach bus? We are coming for Oct. 2014. We want to tailgate with our bus, is this possible?

Gosh, don't really know about bus parking. I just know that tailgating is only allowed in the VAF sanctioned lots and private lots (like charity parking lots). Do you know where the bus will be parked?

Hi, I have this same dilemma this year. Our friends that we have always tailgated with "graduated" and did not renew season tickets/parking pass. So Lovecuracao said tailgating is not allowed in the parking garages. Can I tailgate at Fontaine, U Hall, or JPJ parking lots? What about picnic tables on grounds, would that be allowed? Seems like options are limited without the VAF parking pass.
