Rafting with children near Charlottesville

We are visiting Charlottesville in July from The UK and would appreciate any recommendations for safe water activities with a 10 year old and 18 year old daughter in tow in the surrounding area.

If you don't find any rafting near Charlotteville, consider driving down to Richmond for great white water rafting right in the city:

You'll need a car, but James River Runners in Hatton Ferry (about 30 minutes due south of Charlottesville) offers tubing on the James River that would be ideal for you (provided all can swim). Details here: http://www.jamesriver.com/tube.htm

They also do canoe and rafting trips, but on a hot summer day the tubing trips are my favorite as you actually float in the river. Very relaxing and refreshing. You'll want to read through their website before you go, and if you do go make sure everyone has aquasocks or other tight fitting sandals they can take into the water with them to let you stand up in shallower portions of the river.

James River Runner, www.jamesriver.com., is a company in Scottsville,, which is 23 miles south of Charlottesville. This is the closest rafting company, but it is very good. You have a choice of rafts, inner tubes, kayaks, and canoes. They do not accept credit cards, you need to have cash or a travelers check.

We just did a tour with James River Reeling and Rafting a few weeks ago. I'd only loosely define it as a "tour," since they deliver you and the tubes to a drop point upriver and then you get out at their access point. They do provide tubes and you can also rent a cooler tube. We had a great time, but I'd definitely recommend checking the river levels before you go. If it's too low, you'll end up carrying your tube part of the time.

We've also been white water rafting with River City Rafting in Richmond. It was also a fun trip, although not exactly the same caliber as some other rivers. It was a unique experience to raft right through the downtown area. The minimum age for the River City trip is 12 years old, but it's only 9 for the River Trip.

Both of those will likely require a rental car (or some very creative alternate transportation). If you do have a car, how far are you willing to travel? There are lots of day trip options if you're willing to go a bit further.
