Boston to Stowe; Stowe to NYC - crazy idea??

Hi there we are coming to the US on honeymoon Jan 4th 2010! plan to fly into boston and drive or take bus to stowe and ski for 5 days then make our way to nyc before flying home to Ireland.

1. Will we need a hire car in Stowe (staying in Stowe Mtn Lodge) or are taxis for nite excursions readily available? We fancy staying on the Mountain but like to think we would party 1 or 2 nites in the Village!

2. Is it realistic to think we could get to Stowe using public transport from Boston after an overnight in Boston? Does anyone ever bus to say Burlington and taxi from there? Is this crazy|!

3. Is the Stowe Mtn Lodge gorgeous? We will be on honeymoon and want luxury after skiing obviously! Is it the best place to stay in Stowe?

4. All advice much appreciated.

Many thanks!

Glad you are coming to visit for your honeymoon..congrats. I believe you will need to rent a car or your entire trip. Public transportation into Vermont is not so easy especially into the mountains. You can check Greyhound Bus and Peter Pan Bus and Vermont Transit Bus...also check Amtrak Train to see if they get you anywhere near Stowe......my guess is no. Your ride from Stowe back to New York City could be a 6 to 7 hour drive...in good weather. Remeber this is winter and snow storms pop up making the driving difficult especially if you are not used to driving in snow. There are 2 Amtrak Trains that service Vermont....one is called The Vermonter and the other The Ethan Allen Express. You can find them both on the Amtrak site www.amtrak.com Good luck with your planning!!!!! Oh, when you check out the train schedule you might consider Killington instead of Stowe as another option.

Congrats!! Good comments above - agree 100%. There is daily bus service from Boston to Burlington, but Stowe is about 50 minutes' drive from there so the bus + taxi or shuttle to Stowe might be more expensive than just renting a car for the week in Boston and driving at your own pace.

The drive from Boston to Stowe is about 3 hours in good weather, and is an easy (and quite pretty) drive on good roads.

Taking the Amtrack train from Essex Junction or elsewhere in VT to NYC is an interesting option. Certainly worth looking into, if driving the 6-7 hours south to NYC isn't your cup of tea. If you DO do that drive, it's also an easy one to navigate - I-89 to I-91 to I-95.

When you're in Stowe, you'll have no trouble calling taxis for a couple of nights out. There aren't many of them cruising around, so you'll want to have your hotel/bar call for one when needed.

Can't help much on Stowe Mtn Lodge from personal experience, but it looks very impressive from the outside. Trattoria la Festa is one of our favorite restaurants in Stowe, and it's quite close to the lodge (maybe 1 mile...?). Foxfire is another excellent place, though that's perhaps 8-9 miles away. There are plenty of bars in Stowe. The Shed has some good on-site brews. The Matterhorn was always our favorite for a funky local bar - often with live music. Both are within a couple of miles of the mountain.

Enjoy your trip!

There is an Amtrak stop at Woodbury-Stowe, and the trip to NYC takes about 9 hrs and costs about $50 one way. There is a trolley from the station. You can take the train from Boston as well.
