What to do outside of Fairlee, Vermont

I'm staying in a rented house in Fairlee, Vermont for a long weekend. What is there to do outside of the town? I love the outdoors. Any hiking trails or scenic drives?

Just a short drive to the East of Fairlee, over in NH you'll find all the hiking opportunities you can stand. I strongly recommend the Lost River Gorge http://www.findlostriver.com/ as you can finish off your trip through the gorge with a short hike that begins right in there parking lot.

As for scenic drives, hey you’re already on Route 5. Head north out of Fairlee up through the beautiful CT River Valley. Bradford,VT has a retro Main ST [stuck in the 50's] with some really interesting little shops. The next town is Newbury,VT where you will want to stop at the Newbury Village Store http://www.vaics.org/vaics-newbury.html on the green. Also if you time it right and they're open check out Oxbow Books http://www.oxbowbooksvermont.com/home.php just outside of town. Continue north with views of mountains to your left and the river to your right. You can go to St J on Route 5 if you wish.

I like to pick up Comerford Dam RD in E Barnet [this is going to be a dirt road part the way] it will become Lower Waterford RD and will bring you out in Lower Waterford,VT at Route 18 which you can take East crossing into NH right below the Wilder Dam. From here you could take 135 into Littleton NH [very neat town with the World largest candy counter] and pick up Route 302 West back to Woodsville,NH, or you can stay on 135 winding back down along the opposite side of the CT River into Woodsville. From here pick up RT 10 south. This will take out through some beautiful little towns on the NH side of the river. Finally you'll end in Orford,NH [know as Fairlee's beautiful sister], where you can cross the bridge on 25A back into Fairlee.
