Where to go for 3 nights

We are flying into Boston on June 26 and will return to Boston on the 30th to spend the night before leaving the next day early. We were thinking of driving either to Vermont or Maine. We haven't been to either state and are getting away for a few days with no kids. Would love to find a charming, luxurious base to explore either Maine or Vermont or a few days. Any suggestions?

Tough choice? Would you prefer ocean or mountains?

For ocean, go with Maine obviously. Lots of great towns, beaches, etc. along the Maine Coast.

If you'd prefer mountains, then come to Vermont. Stowe, Woodstock and Manchester are the 3 most popular tourist destinations -all offer nice accommodations, restaurants etc. You may also want to consider Middlebury or Montpelier if you'd like a little less touristy.

What kinds of things would you like to do? Spa? Shopping? Hiking? Agri-tourism? Canoe/Kayaking?

Evening harringk,

Big choices....I'd do Vermont at that time of year as you really need more time to see Maine....if you do, consider Woodstock VT (www.woodstockvt.com) as I think it will provide you with the escape you seek. As Vter says...what are you looking to do?

Vermont and Maine are both nice. It depends on are you looking for the lush green mountains of Vermont or the cool, dark blue waters of Maine?

Agree with Vter, the top 3 spots are Manchester, Stowe and Woodstock.

It is probably best to stay in one place, but you could possibly do 2, but 3 different locations would be too much for the time allowed.

If you were to try to get to 2 spots, for ease of travel, I would suggest Stowe for 2 nights which might allow you to visit Burlington and the Shelburne Museum(quite unique) and then one night back in Woodstock which will put you a little closer to your return to Boston.

Manchester is nice but quite a bit less accessible from the Interstate highways than Stowe and Woodstock....
