Day trip to Burlington

Hi there, I live over on the east side of the state, moved here in 02 from the west coast of the US. Husband and I want to go over to Burlington and the lake for a day and do some sightseeing but we're not sure what to do? Any suggestions? We'd like to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. Looking for original, fun things rather than the 'touristy' things. I heard the Shelburne museum is excellent...

Thanks!

You might try renting a lake kayak and going out. Try umiak.com. You might go to Red Rocks park and jump off the cliffs if it is warm enough. You might rent some bikes and ride along the bike path on the lake. You might get a beer and hang out on church street and people watch (try sweetwater fo shade), Ken's pizza for sun.

Have fun.

Kayaking or sailing is a great idea. Try the Lake Champlain Sailing Center on the waterfront, north of the coast guard. It's right on the bike path, north of the Coast Guard. Have a drink at Splash at the Boathouse, also on the waterfront.

The Shelburne Museum is amazing but plan on several hours there to see as much as you can. Vermonters are half price this summer.

The Shelburne Museum is indeed excellent. And now that they offer a special price for Vermonters during the entire 2005 season, you can enjoy a little perk right in your new home state! :o) You might want to allow a full day at Shelburne Museum, as it is a very large place with many buildings and exhibits. http://www.shelburnemuseum.org

Since you are looking for a little outdoor activity, may I also suggest you check out Shelburne Farms? There are beautiful walking and (light) hiking trails, with vistas of the lake that can't be beat. The Inn at Shelburne Farms offers meals, but you can also find other eating options right in Shelburne. Here is a link to their website: http://www.shelburnefarms.org/

If you enjoy bicycling, you might like to try the Burlington Bike Path, which follows the lake and even crosses a bike bridge into Colchester.

And here is a link to the Winooski Valley Park Disctrict, which offers a number of trails for various outdoor activities, such as Birding, canoe launches, hiking, biking
