Book an overnight room at The View Hotel or Gouldings Lodge. Those are the ONLY places you can stay at Monument Valley. Plan to take a back country tour with a native guide. A regular tour will travel the loop road only. A back country tour will add an hour or more and take you to sites that are otherwise inaccessible.

Don't be surprised to find both hotels sold out for August. If so, your next options are any miles away and poorer in quality. I would go north to Mexican Hat or Bluff. Kayenta to the south is desolate and really lousy IMO.

Just came back from a road trip and drove through Monument Valley. We just enjoyed the drive through (from Arizona to Utah)--stopped lots of times for photos. Chose not to do the Navajo visitor center/dirt road tour, but we aren't professional photographers either, we just wanted to be able to see it. It really is in the middle of no where--we kept going to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon that day.

Best time for Monument Valley is sunset and sunrise. Esp sunset. You won't forget a stay in The View but it's often booked.

My husband & I went to Monument Valley last month. We stayed at The View.....it is AWESOME...we loved it.

We went through Navajo Spirit Tours (Larson was our guide). We done the 9 a.m. tour which was 2 1/2 hours long.... We really enjoyed it....the scenery is beautiful and we have some amazing pictures too. Larson was very helpful and a wealth of information.

We are so thankful for the opportunity to get to see Monument Valley.. The sunset was beautiful, but we personally enjoyed sunrise from our balcony even more....The stars at night time are so magnificant....they're bright and there are so many..

You will love it there!!!!! Enjoy and have a safe trip!
