Kelso dunes vs Coral Pink San Dunes

I will be travelling from Grand Canyon - Kanab - Vegas - Los Angeles. My overnight stay will be at Kanab. In last part of my trip, I will be visiting Kelso Dunes also. I am not sure, how big or beautiful is Pink Sand Dunes National Park.

Should I choose any one of them ?

Coral Pink Sand Dunes may be hot in day time. Is it accessible/advisable to visit it in dark/night ?

Visiting Coral Pink at night. sort of defeats the purpose of the visit if you want to see the colorful dunes, unless its full moon.

Coral Pink is a state park, not National.

Why not visit first thing in the morning between Kanab and Zion? Get off Hwy 89 at Hancock Road, see the dunes, then take the county road toward Mt Carmel Jct. The soft sand and altitude makes for a tiring hike if you go very far.

The dunes are much different than the Kelso Dunes in that they have pines trees among them, as the area sits at about 6000 feet. It will be hotter at Kelso, which is also more remote.Be prepared.

Coral Pink dunes are not all that big or tall compared to other dune complexes in the desert southwest, but they are very scenic because of the color of the sand and the contrast with the trees.

Coral Pink has off road vehicle access, Kelso is walk in only.

Kelso dunes cover a larger area and are very tall in comparison. They are also known as "singing dunes" for the noise the sand makes as it moves around.

"see the dunes, then take the county road toward Mt Carmel Jct" -- Which is this road ? When I see it on map, it looks like http://goo.gl/maps/NvC3G

89 - Hancock Road - Coral Park - 43 - 89 - 9 towards Vegas. Is this road you are referring to ?

That is the route.

There is also a dirt road that heads from the dunes over to Cane Beds on Hwy 59/389. We take the motorhome and trailer that way to avoid the Zion tunnel, because either the escorts are not being done at the odd hours we roll thru, or to avoid paying the RV escort fees.

For you, I would highly recommend going thru Zion. Its more scenic.
