I told you I would give you an update when I returned from my trip to SPI. Weather was great (water still a little chilly for my taste, but other folks were in). First off, the exit from hiway 77 to hiway 100 is still closed. You have to exit just after you pass through San Benito (a few miles outside of Harlingen). There are a couple of signs telling you where to exit, but watch closely or you will miss them. The exit could be open by the time you go, but I doubt it.
Rental car: I usually rent through Hertz (and they are fine), but this time I rented from Enterprise b/c my daughter had a "connection". George here went above and beyond for us. He had our car parked right by the door, and even escorted us (6 women and it was very late at night). You probably won't care about that, but he was very personable plus we got a good deal.
I saw on another post your question about grocery stores and I agree with Wondertrev. Blue Marlin is great for quick stops, but the HEB in Port Isabel has a lot better selection and is a little cheaper. Of course the SuperWalmart has everything under the sun and it is open 24 hours; get your cooking utensils here (but see what your condo has first). I personally keep my condo very well stocked with cooking gear, but this time I noticed some knives had vanished...Oh, don't forget to get water (bottled or in a jug). The water on the island tastes pretty bad.
The seafood market is the B&A in Port Isabel (on the left past Walmart heading to island). Darlene will set you up. You need to eat here, too. Eat on the deck, best food around in my opinion. This trip we also ate at the Palmetto Inn (mexican and seafood) on SPI. It's been here for 100 years and it is very good, too.
Internet: I have seen a sign that advertises internet use. I THINK it was at the Grapevine Cafe, but I'm not sure. There is a place called Island Internet that does all kinds of computer stuff and I think they have computers to use (for a fee, of course).
Time to start your countdown!!
