Biking on South Padre Island

Just wondering what biking on the island is like. We are staying at a condo on the north end of SPI. Are there bike paths or is it safe to bike on the streets or side walks. We don't want to drag our bikes 1600 miles and find it was a big waste of time. Thanks for your input!

Biking is a major bone of contention on the island. The town is trying to encourage biking and walking as a means of cutting down vehicle conjestion but they are simply not building bike paths or lanes fast enough. There is one that goes up and down the central and south part of Padre Boulevard. To my knowledge there is none up north...but then, there isn't the crowding there is further south. I strongly object to bikers using sidewalks where there is a dedicated bike lane, but when there is nothing else, the sidewalks are an option and there is no law against it.
