Texas Hill County

Hi,

We want to spend 3-4 days with our grandkids 4 and 6 years 3rd week in June. We were thinking of the Hill Country. Would the San Marcos area be a good base? Some nice scenery with an opportunity of some outdoor activities is on our list of priorities, definitely not the outlet malls. It's not clear from the research I have been able to find whether San Marcos is in the Hill country or not. We'd also like to include a day trip to San Antonio. Or are we better of being based in San Antonio and driving out to the Hill country - or any other suggestions? We want to be no more than about 3 hours' drive from Houston to our base, but don't mind driving out up to an hour for day trips.

Any advice gratefully received.

I would recommend staying in San Antonio, maybe even the northwest corner of it, over San Marcos. San Marcos is on the eastern edge, basically an Austin-San Antonio-Fredricksburg triangle area is considered the Hill Country.

You could stay in San Antonio the entire time or easily do a day trip out. June is very hot so you'll want to limit your outdoor activities to morning times.

Welcome to Texas!!

Thank you. Yes we're familiar with the hit and sticky Texan summers! Not our favourite season over there. Another option is to go to the Christchurch area and get some sea breezes, but we've been to Galveston quite a few times and thought Hill Country would be a change?

I'm not aware of any area of Texas called "Christchurch". Perhaps you mean Corpus Christi, along the coast? Spending time along the coast would be a very different trip than spending time in San Antonio or the Hill Country.

If you want to stay inland, I too would recommend San Antonio for kids that age. The Hill Country doesn't really have much to offer them. To me, it's all about scenic drives, visiting wineries, and finding quiet out of the way places to sit and enjoy the scenery. Older kids may enjoy hiking or river tubing, but 4 and 6 seems a bit young for those activities. San Antonio has lots of tourist attractions - museums, a nice zoo, even Sea World, if you wanted to go that route. You could also stay at one of the resorts near San Antonio that offer lots of activities for kids and nice pools for cooling off during the day. The Hyatt Hill Country Resort and the JW Marriott Resort are both highly rated and often recommended.

Have you considered New Braunfels? It's a little closer to San Antonio for a day trip. There is a decent children's museum, Landa Park and the original Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. I think it would give you more to do at your lodging city than San Marcos would. Did anything specific draw you to San Marcos besides the location?

You could also do a day trip from New Braunfels to Enchanted Rock, then stop off at Sauer-Beckman Farm near the LBJ Ranch on your way back, then go through Johnson City (I recommend Pecan Street Brewing for dinner).. You could even squeeze in Luckenbach for a few minutes between Enchanted Rock and the Farm. It would give you a nice Hill Country drive and there should be peaches available between Fredericksburg and Johnson City

IMO, Fredericksburg would be also be a great base. It's like a mini city. Everything you need in any direction and great vacation rentals:

San Antonio has a lot to offer young kiddos - The brand new Doseum will be open. The zoo is always a hit with kids, too. Fredericksburg is great for shopping - not a 4 and 6 year-olds' dream. Enchanted rock is in that area if you're into a little hiking.

For me water is always on the agenda - There are several opportunities in the Hill Country Area. Check out Guadalupe River State park - it's a great place to cool off and have a picnic.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions which are very helpful. I hadn't considered New Braunfels but will certainly do so now and San Antonio. So good to get information from people who know the area!

I'm with MrTed's suggestions of Hyatt Hill Country and JW Marriott resorts. Each has activities for young and older. Make excursions into downtown SA and the Hill Country in the mornings then hit the water slides and pools in the afternoons.
